Is music today good? Look, we are all in the same group of music lovers. But... let’s be honest. We, as a group, have decided that “in through the out door” by Led Zeppelin was the 33rd best album of 1979. 33rd. This is an album that contains ‘in the evening’, ‘fool in the rain’ and ‘all of my love’.
These are 3 songs that could all be argued as the best song of 2018. Am I saying this was the 33rd best album of 1979? No, probably not. We may have made a mistake there a bit. But it’s certainly not a top 7 album (seriouly, look at what it’s competing with.)
But, if this album comes out tomorrow, what do people say? Honestly? I know on this site we are great music minds and no one falls for some magazine bullshit. But listen to parquet courts, or car seat headrest or whatnot, whole album, then listen to in though the out door.
And with those 3 songs I named, add “in the evening” which is also a great song. And to note, the rest of the album is terrible. And the argument is not even that it’s a great album, or even a great Led Zeppelin album. Simply that this album with 4 real good songs is better than any rock album for the past few years.
I know. I’m struggling to compare these past few years to decent/ok albums of the past. Can’t even begin to compare them to the great ones. We’re about ready for another ‘Suburbs’, aren’t we?
But, if this album comes out tomorrow, what do people say? Honestly?
If it came out tomorrow, people would probably call it a regressive attempt to cash in on a long-irrelevant genre or something along those lines. If it was released under a name other than Led Zeppelin, potentially nobody would talk about it at all. It might be a hit with the baby boomer demographic though, and the tour could make for effective nostalgia therapy in retirement homes.

You can argue anything, it doesn't mean it's right. Music had become stale by 1979, and thank God (and the Pixies lol) we broke out of it.

Yeah I didn't even know Zeppelin put out an album in 1979, if it were just found out today there would be numerous "Thumbs up if you're listening in..."-crowd-based jerk-off discussions praising the album to the heavens and then everybody would forget it by the end of 2019.
Yeah, this is off the rails a bit. But, I disagree. If zeppelin had never existed and this album came out today, in the evening and fool in the rain would blow people’s kids, I think. There is a pre-conceived notion of a dislike for Led Zeppelin that is driving a lot of these comments, i think.
