Whilst Some Rap Songs is easily one of my favourite albums of 2018, it poses the same problem Roc Marciano's Behold a Dark Horse did for me when it came to picking songs to nominate: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Taken out of context, these songs lose a lot of the power they have when taken as a (beautifully comprised) unit. The single made no sense to me until I heard the record, and 'The Mint', whilst great, makes much less sense as a standalone. That Ness Nite song (from her massively underrated album) is lovely, a piece of post-Sade, quiet storm, quasi-ambient trap'n'b, buoyed by bubblegum g-funk synth squiggles, which - whilst understated - packs a punch. Gets my vote here.

The Mint gets my vote, but just slightly. Really really enjoyed both tracks.

Completely agree with Skinny here. I LOVE Earl Sweatshirt, but have to agree that this track doesn't quite work as a standalone single. Whereas I'm loving the charm of this Ness Nite album and honestly could have picked a couple of different tracks from her genre defying impossible to pigeonhole LP.

Ness Nite.

Both songs are ok for me, but nothing more. I have a slight preference here for The MInt, who got my vote.

If only Earl smushed everything into one song 🙁

You're totally right, a single doesn't do the album justice, but I had to slip in some dues for him. And regardless, it's still a fantastic track.

Earl's album is definitely better than the some of its parts but The Mint is one song I enjoy listening to on its own. I prefer it to the other song which isn't really my style of R&B.

The Earl Sweatshirt song did nothing for me. Vote to Ness Nite which did less nothing.

Yeah The Mint definitely works better in an album context, and it's not one of my favorite tracks from Some Rap Songs. That said, it's still easily my preference here.
