I really wanted to like both of these, but I really couldn't get into either one. Picked Low by the lowest of margins.

Something about ABC's tasteful, formalist revivalism, whilst undoubtedly competent, leaves me pretty bored. The Low album, I find texturally interesting but also a little one-note, as though they decided to use some unusual (for them) production choices in lieu of writing actual songs. I don't hate either record, but both feel slightly low-key.

Yeah. Revisited both today and that did not provide clarity.

🤣

This might be a recurring theme... I suppose in this round I'd like to think Avantdale Bowling Club had more?

Low's record might be "critically" acclaimed, but it took me nowhere. Avantdale Bowling Club was filled with flair.

i absolutely voted avantdale bowling club. it's not the year's most memorable record, but it's spunky. it's got flair.

this is low's boringest and most critically acclaimed album. it starts off on a strong note too, indicating that for once, they're willing to try something different, but the change is only in texture. it's mostly a snoozefest. and very vanilla. very plain. rather boring. i don't mean to take the piss out on low. some of low's work is quite brilliant (murderer is an all-time favorite song of mine), but i rarely make it through an entire record from them. it all feels so watered down and samey. i i tried listening to this one in particular 5-6 times before i made it to the end. do they fall asleep making their records? probably.

I would argue that the Low album is better but I'd vote on ABC for having a debut from the jazz rap genre that doesn't really fall into doing the same things as a jazz rap album where it could be in a collection of modern jazz albums.
