Descension (Out Of Our Constrictions) by Natural Information Society

Iโ€™m soooooo sorry for the delay everyone. I finally had my second shot Friday, and I was wiped out for all of Monday.

In any case, this was actually my first album from these guys, but if youโ€™re like me, the idea of โ€œpost-minimal free jazz with Evan Parkerโ€ is an instant sell, and this album has such an extraordinary energy that makes it my favorite album of the year. I hope yโ€™all enjoy <3

So I love the Natural Information Society stuff, got Magnetoception on my main chart, but I still haven't heard this. Part of it is because of Evan Parker being an absolute nut, talking about how COVID vaccines are putting software into people and doing pieces using quotes from AIDS deniers to express his antivax sentiments. Kind of sapped the urgency on this one from me, it's not like I'm lacking for choices in good music already. But I also looked back at my listening since COVID started, and I haven't been listening to any NIS stuff, it popped up a lot over the other years, but I think the repetition really doesn't work for me right now. I will listen to it eventually, but I think I need to get more variety in my days before the ecstatic constancy of this music can have the desired effect once again.

Uhh well barring the above about Evan Parker, I thought this album was quite good.

It was a really cool listen, very jazzy and super interesting arrangements and improvisations. I assume this was recorded live? Either that or it was a very odd choice to dub crowd cheers/claps onto the music.

In any case, thanks for posting this, definitely going into my chart.

elevated studio technique right here. if I ever record anything in a studio I'll make sure it rivals the incessant Golden Girls laugh tracks

lol apt comparison. Dubbing an audience to make the album seem live (or to make a live album seem even MORE live a la Kiss' "Alive!") used to be much more common, and I was thinking it might've been a thing they did on this album if they couldn't play live due to covid.

Did some research though and it looks like this was actually recorded live in July 2019: https://eremite.com/album/mte-74-75

I think this is the most acclaimed album to do it - only one of the tracks is actually live:

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother And The Holding Company

It's ridiculous, and as EyeKanFly alluded, it was not uncommon for bands to release fake live albums in the 60s and 70s, often with "live" in the title.
