As far as I can tell this question hasn't been posed yet here. So which do you prefer? Although Blonde and Blonde is probably my all time favorite album if I had to choose only one to listen to it would be really difficult, right now I would lean towards Neil. Try ranking their albums against each other, here's how I have it:
1. Blonde On Blonde - Dylan
2. On the Beach - Young
3. Tonight's the Night - Young
4. Blood on the Tracks - Dylan
5. Rust Never Sleeps - Young
6. Highway 61' Revisited - Dylan
7. After the Gold Rush - Young
8. The Basement Tapes - Dylan (and the Band)
9. Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Young
10. Bringing it All Back Home - Dylan
11. Comes a Time - Young
12. Freewheelin Bob Dylan
13. Nashville Skyline - Dylan
14. Modern Times - Dylan
15. Harvest - Young
If I could only listen to 15 albums for the rest of my life I think I'd be okay with this
Neither of them are really my style, and I haven't listened to Neil all that much, but from what I've heard I think I prefer Dylan. Highway 61 and Freewheelin' are just too good to be beaten by anything of Neil's, in my opinion.
The average quality of Neil's albums is higher than Bob's, mostly because Dylan has produced a lot of awful shit. However, Dylan have more standouts, and I'd rate him higher than Neil Young. I think every song of Blonde on Blonde top every Neil Young song.
When talking about whether people can sing, I once found this amusing comment on OK Computer:
"Dylan can't sing but I love him. Thom York can't. most rock pop singers can't technically sing but it goes with the music and what fantastic music it is."
