i wasn't expecting much when i listened to this album, but i was surprised of how many good songs i discovered in it especially When The Levee Breaks which became one of my favorite songs ever.
I've always considered this to be just a "very good" album. Nothing more, nothing less. While "Stairway to Heaven" is certainly a masterpiece, "Dazed and Confused" trumps it in every way, as does the Led Zeppelin debut in general by a long shot.
I've always thought this was by far the best Led Zeppelin album and one of the best albums of all time. And while I still stand behind that, I think I enjoy the album less each time I listen to it. I think that the guitar solos and riffs (not here but in general) don't have the same importance to me as they use to have, so I don't really enjoy some of the music that is based mostly on them the way I used to (and classic rock falls into that category). So while I still recognise these songs as being at least "very good", it just doesn't feels the same
However there are still three songs that I still find absolutely perfect:
- Stairway to Heaven - great structure, and the guitar solo actually is fantastic (not just for being technically complex either)
- Going to California - really fine acoustic song, brings what they did on LZ III to another level
- When the Levee Breaks - OK now this is just an exceptional riff and an album closer.
