As far as American rivals to the Beatles, I think I much prefer the psych'ed out mess that is VU to the pop-friendly chart-pleasers. Not to say that "Wouldn't It Be Nice" isn't one of the cutest songs ever written, just that, you know, I'd be sad if BEA actually decided Pet Sounds were better.
I think objectively (as possible) they are probably the 2 most influential albums of the last 50 years.
:?
Well what else Mr Smarty Pants?
N.W.A.- Straight Outta Compton (rap)
Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath (metal)
Kraftwerk-Trans Europe Express (electronica)
Robert Johnson-King of the Delta Blues Singers (rock)
The Stooges-Raw Power (punk)
Herbie Hancock-Headhunters (fusion)
Massive Attack-Blue Lines (trip-hop, electronica)
...
I mean, there's no one or two albums that have far-reaching effects across several genres, so to say that VU&Nico and Pet Sounds are THE two most influential albums is retarded. You're neglecting Metal, Punk, Jazz, Electronica, and many other genres where prominent artists don't give a fuck about either. You think Eazy-E had the Beach Boys in mind when he was rapping?
