"A buffet of music. Some really good stuff, some strange stuff, some fluff, some stuff that really grows on you. I can understand all the crap this album got back in the day. Realeased today it would be called a masterpiece. And, in many ways, it is."

"After the massive album London Calling, The Clash return with a triple album that is....mediocre. Sound of Sinners, Police on My Back and Washington Bullets are strong numbers, but for the most part this is a rather dull affair."

Sandinista! Is one incredible release and has a fascinating story about how it came into being. When listening to it the first 4 sides are A grade Clash but why are sides 5 and 6 full of these dub space jam numbers that are ok but not up the standard of what's gone before? Both the Clash and Springsteen were signed to Sire and Strummer got wind that Springsteen was making a double album (The River). Legend has it he declared if he's doing a double than we're doing a triple!. Some might say a fateful decision because if took the best 18-20 tracks and released Sandinista! as a conventional double it's perhaps even better than the formidable London Calling. Strummer was his own man though and the Clash were never conventional.
