- Post subject: Cool Emoji doubling as common date entry
|
All of a sudden, any list and any post I've typed an 8 followed by parenthesis now shows a "cool guy" emoji instead where part of the date (of an album, film, classical work, painting, etc) used to be.
This is particularly annoying because years (for dates of albums, films, classical works, etc) end with an 8 from time to time and it is completely normal to use parenthesis around numbers in every day writing/typing for entries including such dates, so for this to "double" as an emoji...
Can we please remove this all together and maybe for at least just this "cool" emoji it should only be usable by clicking it on the emoji key above all of our posts (no longer able to be entered by text?)... Users almost never add emojis using purely text any more any way, I don't think, do they?
Or, maybe there's another solution, such as a slightly different text that needs to be entered in for the cool guy emoji (maybe asterisks around the 8 + parenthesis, something like that), instead of it also being a fairly common type of date entry...
Either way, if this could please be changed it would be much appreciated.
Or maybe -- while still keeping with date entries ending with an 8 and still accompanied by parenthesis -- there is already an option around this that I've missed all this time? _________________ Best Classical

Hi, there's an option to disable smilies which you can check when editing a post and this will prevent the issue (sorry if a bit short as on mobile)..
EDIT: apologies looks like something's changed and system is being more aggressive - I'll check into/fix, but previous sentence holds as well.
EDIT 2: Just deployed a fix for this (hopefully resolved8) (small test at end)

It's been that way for many years, ever since I joined the site. I first noticed it about ten years ago on the movies forum, where it's common to put dates in () after mentioning a movie. I, plus several others, have inadvertently put the 😎 instead of 8 ). It never bothered me, I found it slightly amusing, and readers understood anyway. It was also easy to work around by simply putting a space in between, as I just did.

I've noticed it for years too, it just all of a sudden went extra bonkers, showing up across all the dates ending in 8+parenthesis on any of my lists and posts, where it hadn't before and whereas before it wouldn't automatically do so on those dates (just other types of entries)... hence my request. Seems fixed now... _________________ Best Classical

Apologies for issues, right to point out this has been happening in one form or other for a long time 🫠 . Added a 'fix' a couple of days back to address an issue where a couple of smiles were causing rendering issues (wrong smilies being rendered) and then introduced a bug in the 'fix' where rendering became too aggressive (smilies wrongly detected within word boundaries) and it was this bug that was fixed yesterday (hopefully). (All to do with the switch-over from the old smilies to the new ones, a lot of ancient code changed and cobwebs disturbed).
