I'm not sure I've ever fully understood what postpunk is exactly, in terms of sound and genre specifics, not time period. 🤔 Are Wire, Gang of Four, and The Fall more or less the pallbearers? So I guess angular rhythms and minimalism are a big part of the sound?
As for being unsung, I was definitely aware of Bahaus and Sisters of Mercy when I started to get into what would later come to be labeled "alternative music" as a teenager. So if they were known, why are they on the list?

Yeah I struggle a bit with the labelling as well... It often seems to be used for anything really that was slightly alternative from about 1979 to 1983... I have heard bands like Echo And The Bunnymen or even early U2 described as post punk... Though more commonly it is tagged to bands like Wire and Gang of Four
Motorhead is metal surely?

It's well worth reading Simon Reynolds' "Rip It Up and Start Again" - a great book on post-punk. Especially seeing as it has a lurid yellow cover.

Yeah I have read "Rip It Up and Start Again"... I thought it was going to be about Orange Juice, but as you know it isn't! It's really good.
Orange Juice... now there's a band I used to love... do they count as post punk!? I totally agree about The Au Pairs though 😄
