  • Post subject: Artist career summary in 3 songs
  • Reply with quote
i'm here with a challenge. Sum up an entire artist's career in 3 songs, the longer the career the tougher the challenge. Giving some explanation would help why you think the songs you chose were appropriate.

I'll go first.

genesis

"supper's ready" - At the forefront of genesis's pinnacle, "supper's ready" is a grand, artistic statement full of comedic twists and serious turns. It's a concept album unto itself, something Gabriel would invest in on an album-wide scale 2 albums later.

"follow you, follow me" - Genesis lost Peter Gabriel after "the lamb" and Steve Hackett on "and then there were three" (ATTWT) which is the album they sported their first big hit on what could be seen as a transitional album behind Gabriel's prog-genesis and Collins's pop-genesis.

"invisible touch" - Genesis had pop success on every Collins album after ATTWT culminating in the pure-pop delight, "invisible touch". The title track is probably the most far removed from their 70s output, a simple song about a simple subject boiled down to a 3 minute sugary treat.

Stooges

"I Wanna Be Your Dog" - enter the churning rhythms, perverse sexuality and violence that is the Stooges. The greatest rape song; that piano tapping (that has become very popular (e.g. "Two Weeks")); and those sleigh bells that sound like Christmas, but there is no christ in this song and the only gift given here is Iggy's big black dick. And his deadpan delivery lets you know your vagina's just another afternoon delight.

"1970" - their ultimate churning rhythm, could've turned the world into butter if they weren't careful. This one sounds like a downward spiral of increasing primitiveness as the party gets out of control, but there's a psychedelic saxophone to keep it classy (or is that expressing cumming?). Not as overtly sexual or violent as their other key stuff, but just as nihilistic. I FEEL ALRIGHT!

"Death Trip" - yeah, "Search and Destroy" isn't here. That's because it's not the best piece from Raw Power by a long shot. Whereas "Search and Destroy" has the violence and that great line "somebody gotta save my soul," "Death Trip has the sex, violence, and a more earnest declaration, "YOU'RE GONNA SAVE ME!" Here Iggy seems to have lost all boundaries between sex and violence (breaking in "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell"), unable to distinguish lover from enemy, and will grab and rape and torture anyone until he's satiated; "you're gonna save me" is not so much a desire out of his depravity but rather a statement that a person will temporarily appease his addiction for depravity, whether they like it or not. BABY WHIP ME INTO HEAT, AND TURN ME LOOSE ON YOU. COME AND BE MY ENEMY SO I CAN LOVE YOU TRUE.

Beatles:

I Want To hold Your hand - The best song from their early sound and the one which really dfines their pre Revolver work.

Strawberry Fields Forever - To represent the best of their Psychedelic era, also to show off John's work.

Let It Be - The perfect son to end their career on, chosen to show off Pauls work.

Interesting I got 1 to!

Kings Of Leon:

Molly's chambers: perfect beginning of a career, with a rough sound, easy to listen to and still rock n roll

On Call: they start evolving and making better songs without selling out, and a tribute to all of the fans with 'Fans' from the same album

Sex On Fire: still a 'classic rock song' for me ( you don't have to agree) but the ending of the rock fase, after that they still make a Few good songs but the singles start to get worse and worse, the lead singer gets more drunk than otherwise and they are now on a break...

Ps dont watch the spelling errors I am not English or something Smile

My Bloody Valentine

dream pop

Link

noise pop/rock (guitars get louder, but the vocals are clear)

Link

shoegazing (louder and more agressive than their dream pop material, and more dreamy than the more "in your face" noise pop/rock songs)
