The "worst bands ever" topic got me thinking... And this is what I came up with:
People hate on mainstream music too much. And I mean mainstream in every aspect. From Nickelback to Katy Perry to Linkin Park. If someone had a chart on here with Limp Bizkit on it, it would automatically be subject to bad ratings, even if Limp Bizkit was sandwiched in between The Stone Roses and Joy Division. Which is sad.
Let's be real here. Nickelback is far from the band ever. True. But they are also not the worst thing ever either. The reason people hate on them so much is mostly their popularity. They are just your run-of-the-mill average rock band. Their sound is fairly diluted to the point where we cannot distinguish any actual uniqueness. But their blandness contributes to the why they aren't the worst band. They are average, not evil. The reason behind their fame is that they are not that difficult a listen (such is as most famous bands). They will never be praised for their innovation, but they aren't unlistenable (one could make the argument of the lead singer's voice thought ).
Another reason I think they are hated on so much is that they are the musical equivalent of a wall for some listeners. People want to try and get into "rock" so the easiest and most convenient way is listening to Nickelback (Creed, Three Days Grace, etc.). But once they listen to them, they don't make an attempt to discover anything else, even if, say, they may enjoy The Shins more. Convenience is the key. Most people don't want to have to search that hard for music. Nickelback shows up everywhere. Why not listen to them?
This same principle works for Slipknot and metal, Lil Wayne and rap, Skrillex and dubstep, and I'm sure a lot of others. Which is why people tend to over-generalize metal, and say things like "Oh you like Slipknot then?" when I say I'm a fan of metal. (Well, I've gotten that response). Slipknot isn't the worst thing to happen to metal. They have just imbedded themselves so deep into the mainstream, that it's hard for fans to see anything else. And, alternatively, made it impossible for "real" metal lovers to take Slipknot or their fans seriously. Quite a shame. Slipknot isn't really that great either, but they are far from the worst metal band I've heard. (If anyone wants to check out Cybergore from Avulsed, you will see what I mean).
Yikes this has turned into an an_Outlaw topic . I think the worst music is actually made by artists that took a chance on being bold, but it failed (this is personal to a specific person).
Think about it. I would much rather listen to Meteora by Linkin Park than Trout Mask Replica, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Discovery.
So i guess the whole point is to stop fucking complaining about how shitty mainstream music is. It isn't. It's just average. Nickelback isn't poisoning the world and destroying music as we know it. Get over yourselves.

Well, no. I don't hate on them because they're mainstream.
I hate on them because their music is crap and unbearable, and they should have remained unrecognized like the millions of other crap artists out there.
Katy Perry does have some good songs, but her albums are terrible and her fame is undeserving.

Very well put. I feel like in groups like this (BEA), the underground is the mainstream. Hmmm.... who are the #1 and #2 bands on BEA... The Beatles (who by definition are the biggest sell outs ever) and Radiohead, who like it or not are mainstream by definition. I don't agree that a band can be "great" and not be mainstream. All mainstream really means is that people like it.
The quality of the music differs greatly in mainstream just as it does in indie. You can have amazing mainstream or crap mainstream. You can have amazing indie or crap indie.
This whole attitude of in order for music to be quality music means it can't be mainstream is the stupidest thing I have heard of. I think this attitude has actually made it harder for people to enjoy good music, and has made crappy mainstream music more dominant than good mainstream music.

Limp Bizkit are untalented wannabes, Katy Perry is just a pair of big tits, and I would also "much rather listen to Meteora by Linkin Park than Trout Mask Replica, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Discovery".

Bingo! For me, bad is bad, period! And good is good. Now, I recognize that it's all subjective, but when I hear a song that annoys me or makes me want to leave the room, believe it or not, it doesn't matter whether it's mainstream or not, it's bad, period! And even if Nickelback was on Matador or Merge Records, they would still be seriously annoying. I prefer a lot of indie type bands, but when those bands go mainstream, I don't cop an indie cred attitude, and write them off for being mainstream. It's happening more and more too. Sometime in January or February of 2011, the number one album on the billboard charts was The Decemberists- The King is Dead. When that happens, I don't suddenly think the band I love sucks, I think it's good news for the mainstream. For me, it's about the music. If it's terrible, it's terrible, and if it's good, it's good. Now what about artists who have widespread popularity? Missy Elliott some years back. I thought and think that "Get Ur Freak On" was a great song. Macy Gray had some great songs. Outkast is mainstream and also great. I'll try to think of some others.

Oh, mainstream, mainstream, mainstream.
First: Nickelback is god awful. K. Let's get that out.
Second, Yes, the radio plays bad sucky music for the most part. Songs played on the radio are considered 'mainstream'.
This is where we all conclude that 'mainstream' 'sucks'
The radio stations get certain playlists, from certain companies, from certain label, for a certain price, etc...Everyone wants money. The big labels have money, but no taste. Simple as that.
There are good mainstream artists though. Kanye West, Eminem (early stuff), Missy Elliot, The Black Keys, Coldplay, The Killers, Green Day, Justin Timberlake, Outkast, etc...
Yes, the underground industry has a larger range of better music. And for the most part, it's better than mainstream (of course, Pitchfork makes the odd bad call, and a piece of crap suddenly becomes a masterpiece ...)
Katy Perry actually has 2 songs I like Not because they're good, or are quality music, but just cause I happen to enjoy them.
Can we get over this? _________________ Doubles & Conch

So if it wasn't popular then it can't be great? Gotta say I disagree. Anything that challenges the status quo of its time is bound to face a lot of resistance.
