You know, this is an interesting feature for such websites like BEA. but, I think it needs to be more accurate!
Because as right now, the bands which have the more number of votes (especially those with high ratings) are having the best chances to be shown as the "Members who like this band also like:"! .. for example, popular high rated bands like Radiohead are showing on almost every other band's page from the same era (90s & 00s), and we know that's just not right!
At the moment, this feature looks at which people have added the same band as a favourite, and then from those people, shows the most frequently added bands from the favourites of those members. This is probably why the most popular bands seem to crop up quite a lot.
It could be changed in a variety of ways. Another way might be to see which artists are typically clumped together in member charts, but again, it might end up mainly highlighting the most popular artists. I agree, that genres/tagging might help to refine the selections.
Would it be possible to allow members (or members who have reached a certain level) to contribute to similar artists? We could have members add similar bands/artists to each existing page and then those selections can be up-voted by other members.

Once genres have been added, this whole thing will be re-evaluated. The similarity algorithm should work much better once genres are able to be used within the calculation.
