Guys, listen to "Fade To Black" now. I just did again, and it finally hit me: This song is leagues better than "Stairway to Heaven", or anything that Led Zeppelin ever produced. And that isn't even Metallica's best song!
I often see people ask whether they're better than Megadeth, but I just think that question is simply an an insult to James Hetfield's genius! Sure, Dave Mustang's songs are decent, but NEVER has he achieved the emotion you find in "Master of Puppets".
Sure, they had a long period when they stunk, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they created some of the most amazing metal album imaginable.
So, guys, is Metallica "the best metal band ever"? Or is there someone else (Black Sabbath, perhaps) that deserves the title more.

My vote goes to early Black Sabbath. The Paranoid album in particular opened metal up to a large fan base thus paving the way for all metal bands that followed.

Best Heavy Metal Band ever is a no-contest contest. The gold medal goes to Iron Maiden and nobody else. Every song from the self-titled debut album up to and including Powerslave is great. The two albums that followed contained some filler but still rank higher than most of Metallicas output, and they have continued churning out decent albums ever since (bar a short period when Bruce Dickinson left the band). They are also arguably the best live act there is to catch.
i don't think anything of metallica's is as good as stairway to heaven and i don't like heavy metal.. and yeah, i don't regard led zep as a heavy metal band either _________________ no fat chicks

Metallica doesn't hold a candle to Led Zeppelin. And if we need labels I would call Led Zeppelin hard rock, not heavy metal.

I prefer Iron Maiden to Metallica and also much prefer Rainbow (though I think Rainbow is a little soft to be called heavy metal. I would group them with Deep Purple).
