Well, with all the different kinds of multimedia machines and gadgets with massive amounts of memory, it is now possible to have every song you own (and those you don't) on a single playlist. Is it a must for you to play your music on random like me? Or do you still typically pick and choose what you listen to?

I usually listen by selecting an album, but sometimes I randomize in the hope of rediscovering something I've forgotten about. I also create playlists of songs with a similar vibe and run them on random, just to create a mood.
Have begun to realise the benefits of shuffle only in the last month or two. Had a pile of albums I wanted to get through, but rarely felt in the mood for any of them, so just dumped a lot of them (maybe 2000 tracks) into a playlist, and left shuffle work its magic. Have 'discovered' three or four very good albums as a result ๐บ (with hopefully more to come).
Albums fully through from start to finish is how I listen to the majority of my music, some songs just don't fit well outside of their albums (Intros for example). So usually I just stock up my iPod with full albums, old favourites and newbies, whatever I'm in the mood for, just today at work I played 7 albums (The advantages of days where earmuffs are necessary). I use shuffle occasionally if I have a playlist of some sort but usually I'm playing albums. _________________
I'm mostly the type of person that listens to full albums, but sometimes when I'm not feeling anything specific I'll hit shuffle and hope that guides me to something I want to hear. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Full albums and total random both have their place.
I also rate and tag all songs with various info, so instead of just random I can do 'random 4+ star psychedelic', 'random #1 Billboard hits', 'random outlaw country', 'random songs with New York in the lyrics', and several hundred different limited randoms. Very useful.
i prefer random listening. i think i listen better when the artists change up every song.
It gets quite confusing with my mp3 on random sometimes because of the huge differences between all the bands/artists I have. Yet I'm drawn to random a lot when I can't choose an album.
For me, I just alternate. One day I could listen to full length albums on my ipod, or the next day I could just put my ipod on shuffle and just listen to random songs.
