Following Norman Bates comment that he believes Salvador Dali is awful, it was time to start a fine art thread. I have no idea what this will lead to but I assume someone will eventually question contemporary art, by posting an image of one of Paul McCarthy's more questionable works, so let's get that out of the way.
Dali is awesome and anyone who thinks otherwise obviously understands nothing to art and should actually be banned, like, now.
Honestly I love him and that thread seems cool, I know nothing about fine art and would not be against learning a thing or two. I like to draw Pokรฉmons and I had 18/20 in arts at the baccalaurรฉat, though, so maybe I'm an artist.

What is fine art? I mean, how is it different than just art? Is there shabby art?
Good question. I'm not really sure where the term originates. I think it's just high society speak. I prefer hillbilly art.
I'm personally a rather big fan of Dali and surrealism in general. I had a painting teacher in college who used to say Dali was garbage, but could never explain why. Where Dali may lack in the expressive brush work of a Van Gogh, his imagery and color work is masterful.

that said, I think I prefer Max Ernst over Dali

This.
I'm completely out of touch when it comes to art.
I went to the Louvre once, didn't really get it...
Like I just don't understand how some pieces of art are famous when they're much the same as stuff hanging up in my gran's house with the last 20 years.
I prefer not to get into discussions about defining art, but I guess the closest I've come to finding a good enough definition is that anything which serves no practical purpose and exists to be appreciated is art.
Thus a hammer is not art but if you hand a hammer on a wall with no intention to use it for its intended purpose then it is art.
Also Dalรญ is great and I think his paintings are brilliant dreamscapes, but I can certainly understand his critics (except maybe George Orwell, who found Dalรญ's art to be "diseased" and the artist to be "clearly pro-fascist") - Dalรญ's paintings often have such saturated colours, and have such repulsively high contrast, and a totally incomprehensible use of space, etc. Not to mention they're often re-appropriated by stoner kids who think they're "lol so trippy bro". _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.
