goals for this year include hitting the 500 listened albums mark (done) and cutting this list down to 20, essentially representing the top 4% of the albums i listened to for the year. it's already been pretty hard for me to do. as of december, i've listened to well over 700 albums, so we're down below 3%, which is kind of cool.

Chamber jazz is one form of music that i've heard surprisingly little of, despite its being right up my alley. this record, this work of art, is illuminating, game-changing... all-around mind-guzzling in every way. it is buzzing to the brim with creativity and captivating compositions. there's a wide variety of sounds. from smokey-lounges to summer-city-walks. from old-television-nostalgia to edge-of-your-seat-concert-halling. this record has everything, and it strikes the perfect balance between jazz and classical traditions, at times blurring the line between the two.

If you're like me, string quartets are an uncomfortable subject, as they tend to evoke that wedding troupe blasting out haydn and mozart. not my cup of tea at all. of course, there are performances i quite enjoy, particularly dvorak's, but here, on orange, we're introduced to something different entirely. caroline shaw has re-invented or at least massively innovated what a quartet is capable of. don't overlook this record.

Rock is not dead, and this is my evidence. unlike so many popular, cookie-cutter rock bands of recent memory, this group has swagger. there is a punk spirit programmed into the fabric of their dna, giving them an unapologetic confidence that is refreshing to hear. but beyond what separates them from their contemporaries, this is just a really fun, explosive record.

I'm a huge fan of anne paceo's work, and while i prefer the team she put together on her previous album, i loved this one right out of the gate. leila martial obviously had a busy year, but i hope she's able to work with anne paceo again on a future record and soon cause they're dynamite together.

Post-psychedelia or something. first listen was pleasantly forgettable, but with each repeated listen, this record has cemented itself into the fabric of my dna. huge grower with great everything.

Lots of terrific, atmospheric picks, should put a few more in the queue before the year/decade's end. Don't know what to reccomend as my albums are pretty philistine, maybe try some White Ward?
