Leading experts in low lives, the Viagra Boys, have decided to expand their research into conspiracy folk. It's a match made in heaven as they all have the surrealism and animal imagery needed for a great album. This topic could have been a dour and pretentious condemnation, but instead the band lets the inherent insanity be it's own joke. "Creepy Crawlers" is a musical rant with Seb becoming more frenzied with each line. The delivery of "Oh, it's disgusting" is so incredible, it's earned a permanent place in my mind. "Big boy" is a proud anthem for anyone with the ability to be a mildly functioning adult. The Ape trilogy of "Troglodyte", "The Cognitive Trade-Off Hypothesis", and "Return to Monke" all hit it out of the park. There isn't a track that doesn't have some form of gonzo charm. Welcome to the planet of the apes.

"Dance Fever" is a love letter to performance. Every possible emotion is mined from it's power. "Choreomania" is the visceral overtaking of the body. "Free" is the joy of being one with your favorite music. " Daffodil" is the hunger for its presence. Best of all, these feelings are given to us through one of the best vocal performances of the decade. To move is to be alive.

"St. Francis II" feels like replaying a favorite PC game from your childhood. It brings on a wave of relaxation that is coated with the power of nostalgia. The tracks move into each other like puzzle pieces. It's semi-ambience lets the ear drift away from the critical and into the emotional. The new age influence gives a transcendent spirit. There is no need to stress, it could all be so effortless.

Jazz often feels like it's from the past and electronic like its from the future. When put together, it feels like you are in a bizarre liminal space. "Nights of Lust" buries this feeling deep in the music. The saxophone and the synth combine in an uncanny way. The vocals whisper sinister things in sweet tones. The music is soothing, but on closer listening, it feels off. You shouldn't be here but you don't want to leave. Oblivion is just so charismatic.

The road to hell is paved by artistic improvements. black midi refined their sound and doubled down on lyrical content. Characters like "Tristan Bongo" or "Sun Sugar" are given detailed personalities and origins. You see what the world does to them and them to the world. This intimacy only makes their descent to hell all the more intriguing. Combined with the smooth track transitions, the fall just seems seamless.
