Dylan Covers 4:Every Song 1990-2020 by US artists
by Moondance
This chart is the 6th & final in the series dedicated to all those USA artists who are either lesser known or completely unknown but have included a Dylan cover song on an album.
This particular chart covers the period January 1990 until June 2020 (Dylan's final studio album), including unreleased songs or outtake songs which were later released on the Bootleg Series of albums.
Once I have listed between 1-3 cover versions of a particular song by lesser known/unknown USA artists, I will move onto the next song in Dylan's chronology for which a cover version(s) are available.
Albums recorded &/or released during this period are:
Under The Red Sky - September 1990
(Note 1: Track 2 - Under The Red Sky has only been covered by 1 non-US artist: Owe Sigvardsson)
(Note 2: Track 10 - Cat's In the Well has only been covered by 2 non-US artists: Kokomo (NZ) & Matpackers (NO))
Time Out Of Mind - September 1997
(Note 3: Dylan released 2 studio albums between UTRS & TOOM, but both were covers albums. The 7 years between UTRS & TOOM was the longest period to date where Dylan did not record any original material - although it was also the period where The Bootleg Series of albums began - which belatedly released unreleased recordings from the early 60's onwards.)
(Note 4: Track 11 - Highlands has not been covered by any US artist and by only 3 non-US artists)
(Note 5: Dreaming of You - a studio outtake, released as a single in 2008 - has not been covered by anyone to date)
Love And Theft - September 2001
(Note 6: Track 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum has only been covered by 2 non-US artists)
(Note 7: Track 4 - Bye & Bye has not been covered by any artists)
(Note 8: Track 10 - Po' Boy has only been covered by 2 non-US artists)
(Note 9: Track 12 - Sugar Baby has only been covered by 3 non-US artists)
Modern Times - August 2006
(Note 10: although scantily covered, each of the 10 songs on this album have been covered by an least one US artist. Stewart Michaels' self-released 'Unplugged Tribute' albums offers 5 cover songs from the album, including the only known covers of 'Rollin' And Tumblin'' & 'The Levee's Gonna Break'.
Together Through Life - April 2009
(Note 11: Although released over 15 years ago, there has (to date) only been two songs of the 10 on offer covered by a US artists - Track 1: 'Beyond Here Lies Nothin'' by Peter Parcek and Track 9: 'I Feel A Change Coming On' by the Mark Adams Band (an album that has been referenced earlier in this chart). As new covers emerge, this chart will be updated but I don't hold out much hope of that happening anytime soon)
Tempest - September 2012
(Note 12 - like its predecessor, this album has only attracted minimal interest in relation to cover songs. Of the 10 songs on the album only 2 ('Duquesne Whistle' & 'Early Roman Kings') have been covered by US artists - & then only once each) and 1 other song ('Long & Wasted Years') has been covered by 2 non-US artists. All the remaining 7 songs have NOT been covered at all). Of all of Dylan's albums, this is the least covered.
Rough & Rowdy Ways - June 2020
(Note 13: Dylan released 3 studio albums between Tempest and R&RW, but these were covers albums. The 8 years between Tempest and R&RW is the longest period where Dylan did not record & release any original material - and in all likelihood this will be the case in Dylan's entire anthology, given that he recently celebrated his 83rd birthday.)
(Note 14: at the time of writing, the R&RW album has only been commercially available for 4 years - however it has received high praise, proven to be commercially successful and achieved chart success. Nevertheless, it remains a poorly covered album (by both US & non-US artists), similar to Together Through Life (2009) & Tempest (2012).)
(Note 15: The 10 tracks on R&RW have the following covers history:
Track 1 - I Contain Multitudes: 0 US covers; 3 non-US covers (one instrumental)
Track 2 - False Prophets: 0 US covers; 1 non-US cover (instrumental)
Tracks 3, 5, 6, 8 & 9 - My Own Version Of You; Black Rider; Goodbye Jimmy Reed; Crossing The Rubicon; Key West (Philosopher Pirate) all have 0 covers
Track 4 - I've Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You: 0 US covers; 1 non-US cover (Cowboy Junkies)
Track 7 & 10 - Mother of Muses; Murder Most Foul: 1 US covers each (Rory Block)
(Note 16: until further covers emerge from US artists over time - which is likely - this is the final note on the 'Dylan Covers - Every Song' series.)
