“One more! One more!!” yells (I assume) someone in the mic’d up crowd as Prince’s greatest record fades to an eye-watering silence. I love closing tracks at the end of great records that literally give themselves a well deserved round of applause. Madvillainy being one, Purple Rain being another.
This title track delivers a message through sound, feeling, and of course, color like very few songs Prince ever wrote. Purple Rain closes out the album in a hopeful, majestic, and with the Beatles psych-era strings at the song’s end, mysterious manner.
Back to the “One more!” guy. Hard to believe anybody could fathom a band coming back on stage on topping *this* performance of *this* song. And hey, maybe that’s what Prince got a kick out of the most with the album’s fade-out shouts.

The mystique of Purple Rain is as equally incredible as the song itself - the fact that no complete studio recording of it exists; the fact that the "ooh's" at the end came about because fans started singing them when it was performed live; the fact that you can hear the crowd cheering every so often; the fact that album version has rhythm guitar performed by Wendy Melvoin, only 19 and on her live debut with The Revolution; the fact that Prince never told us who the song was really written about; the rawness yet warmth of its emotions; the whole image its lyrics conjure up.
Purple Rain is one of the most scintillating and most magical moments in musical history, truly being a song that never, *ever* gets old. A timeless testament to one of the greatest performers the world has ever seen.
