I could swear "Creep" reached #1 too...but I admit it was a long time ago so my memory is faded..

The highest "Creep" got on the charts was #7 in UK, #6 in AUS, and #3 in NOR, or #2 in U.S. Alternative charts if you want to count that.

Although ELO had a UK #1 with Xanadu and some other ones around the world, I feel that this must be mentioned here...

Despite early singles success in the United Kingdom, the band were initially more successful in the United States, billed as "The English guys with the big fiddles". They soon gained a cult following despite lukewarm reviews back in their native United Kingdom. By the mid-1970s, they had become one of the biggest-selling acts in music. From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated 27 Top-40 hit singles in both the UK and the US. The group also scored 20 Top 20 UK hit singles, as well as 19 Top-20 hit singles in the US (as charted by Billboard Magazine). The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100, Top 40 hits of any group in US chart history without ever having a number one single.

I guess Billboard is important for marketers, labels, or anyone who wants to make money, but nothing about the quality. 🤡 It's a shame that artists need to worry about that...

It was definitely a top 5 on the U.S. pop charts, too. I used to listen to Kasey Kasem and Rick Dees on weekends with their respective Top 40 countdowns. Just don't remember where it peaked.

I never had much.

To demonstrate: a decent little ditty by a Scottish band called The Proclaimers was released in 1988 on their Sunshine In Leith album called "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" made NO impact whatsoever in the U.S. ...until 5 years later when it was featured in a film called Benny and Joon. Suddenly it was at the top of the charts, peaking at #3 and reaching #27 in the year-end chart.

Basically, until a song is popular somehow, it doesn't go anywhere on the charts, which are a measure of sales. And most people don't listen to music for the sake of music and don't care about its quality. They like the music that makes them want to dance and that they know everyone else likes and is socially acceptable. This explains how the majority of songs topping those charts are sheer and utter crap, yet once in a while a really good song catches on and tops the charts.

Of all these, the Who surprises me the most. Most don't surprise me, actually... the masses don't listen to this stuff.
