Mayhem. They fueled a lot of the early 90s black metal that came out of Norway and paved the way for many of the best black metal bands.
As far as their music, it's nothing special. But important to the genre nonetheless.

I think they're like Jane's something....
Weezer had the opposite effect actually. Pinkerton only became critically acclaimed years after it's release. The blue album had the opposite situation as Pinkerton.

And that immediately made me think of Oasis, who didn't perhaps do anything particularly original but became popular, in the UK at least, because they were the perfect antidote to grunge.
