Do you guys remember Best Coast? What about Tyler the Creator, Lana Del Rey? What ever happened to Chillwave, Witch House and Seapunk?
Image and gimmicks are a pretty big part of getting your music out there. Occasionally, Pitchfork, NME and various other music blogs hype a few artists/movements to all hell because of the unique character/gimmick they present with/in their music. This attention can often overshadow the music itself.
Here's a pretty talked about new genre - what people are calling Vaporwave. The artist, Macintosh Plus, samples pop songs from the 80's and 90's and slows them down, adding some new instrumentation and grooves. Each track also has Japanese titles. The title of this track translates to 'Lisa Frank 420/Modern Computing.'

I still listen to all of these .
Vaporwave is not new, in fact some hipster elite would argue that it's already dead, despite a few vaporwave releases in 2012. Lethalnezzle and I have chatted about this, and I think we both agree that it's ridiculous that muzak is being released as legitimate albums now (though, I think he digs one album of the genre).

Radiohead often borders on muzak. So does Vampire Weekend, for that matter.

Yes, it isn't 'new,' though it is only now becoming popular.
Perhaps I should've used 'budding' instead.
Yeah same here. Why do people act like hype is a bad thing it's good for the artist,it's good for the publication and it's good for the public at large apart from "hipsters" some would argue.I love the hype machine, fuck errybody else.
