I think there's an argument to be made for The Blue Album and Pinkerton actually being great albums by otherwise bad artists.

Indeed. Unless one doesn't rate Lou Reed very highly, but that is another debate.
I'd say "Electronic Sound" by George Harrison. An unlistenable record by a very listenable artist.
