You know, I find people use the term "compensation" a lot in the psychological sense without the people using it knowing what it refers to. In short, no, bullies and trolls are rarely just attempting to "compensate" for anything. Often it is done more out of catharsis or release, like the victim is a living stress doll. But hey, taking the piss out of someone is not only fun, it's also hilarious. It's the basis of the majority of what we call comedy, too.

No, it's just not the correct way to treat other people. There are ways to justify it, but that's all. Thinking up reasons why it's right and making justifications is tantamount to a confession of guilt.

And, hey...if you do it on the internet, no one can kick your ass for it. It's a great way to be a bully without having to worry about getting punched in the face for being a douche.
