No limiter on how many albums per artist.
For Grindcore releases, easily my fave subgenre at this time, I decided to indiscriminately include any grind album for consideration. I went back and forth on this as there is pretty clearly a split between more hardcore punk-based grind and more extreme metal-based grind. I didn't wanna think about it. Grind included.
Will not try to make a balanced top 100. If there are just a couple old school metal and tons of Thrash or Death metal, then there you go. You should be able to tell generally what my favorite styles or subgenres or aesthetics are my faves by the time you read this chart. And if you see an outlier, like 1 or 2 of a major genre represented, then you can guess I have either not heard much of that style or I think these are PARTICULARLY great and so great as to overcome by biases.
In looking over the genres and trying to narrow down to 100, I was reminded how many great albums I need to check out. I am far from a very well-listened metal fan still. I will continue listening to cool stuff and re-evaluating albums and I will try to update this from time to time.

Great list. Not many Metal fanatics on this site. I see Psalm69 just missed the cut. Opeth too just missing the cut. Surprised no Opeth at all hit your top 100. And no Anthrax. Among the Living & Persistence of Time both being supreme thrash albums. Quite a few on your list I'll have to check out. Good stuff.

Thanks so much, LedZep! You are one of those top tier friends that I was most curious to hear from regarding this chart.
I am excited by all there is to check out and by how much amazing stuff I've explored in the last 3 years since I had my sudden metal interest explosion.
I would love to see your no BS (not that you would indulge BS), no frills, honest top 100 Metal albums/EPs. I would be curious to know who are the bands that dominate the list with multiple entries if any (for me its slayer and Priest to a lesser degree, for you it will be probably Cradle of Filth ... i kid i kid). I'd love to then make a fun game (maybe other metal fanatics can make similarly 100 lists of their honest faves and we can add them to the game) where we listen to the highest and main omissions in our own listening from each other's lists and compare notes. Idk. Just a thought.

Wow I completely missed this. What an incredible collection of albums. It's much more diverse than what I was expectinh based on your intro - sure, we all know you like a lot of grind and thrash, but I think all major genres are represented here. I've heard most of these, but there are several I don't remember well and 15-ish I've not heard at all. Excellent stuff, love it, and I'm inspired to make my own version of this chart right now lol.
