Same response as the song title thread. It could definitely add to an album's mythology or meaning of the music inside to the listener. But it should no way detract from the music inside. A good record is a god record.
Yeah, album art is totally super important. What caught my eye in Love's Forever Changes was actually the cover. Even after the first listens, when I didn't like it that much, it made me come back to it, I was like "How could I not like an album with such an amazing cover?" Well I didn't expect it to become my fave ever, but...
When I was 14 my friend's older brother went away to uni and so my friend moved into his old bedroom. We used to get high as shit in there, and it had a massive handpainted mural of the cover of Forever Changes on the back wall. On the other wall was a mural of Sinatra from the cover of Come Fly With Me. It was a pretty cool little smoking den.
It's very important. It's the very first impression of the album that the artist presents you with.
That and also, the artist usually has some say in what the album art looks like, to direct the potential audience. It's also fun to look at. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

There isn't even a smiley to traduce how awesome I think it is.
I think it matters when you are drawing in new fans because it's the first thing you see. I suppose, now that people can listen online and such it matters less because you just click a button and it is instant, whereas before you rely had to rely on what the cover looked like and reviews and possibly singles too, before you bought the album.
Still I do like an artist that puts effort into the album cover; I have an entire wall of my bedroom devoted to my favourite covers and artwork is usually my deciding factor of whether I'll buy a physical copy of an album or download; because if the artwork is good, I want it on my wall.
