I just noticed this. I Could Live In Hope is overproduced? The production on I Could Live In Hope is incredibly minimal. Next you're gonna tell me Guided By Voices' Bee Thousand is overproduced

We were joking about that on skype. I Could Live In Hope has some "echoey" vocals, meaning it's overproduced to JMan.

i guess there are a lot of little things that make an album stick with me.
a unique, individual sound is probably the most important.
it can't be too repetitive (think about how god awful m&s's repetitiveness is and then go on the opposite side of the spectrum and you're good) but it has to remain cohesive
    not overproduced
it's not looking to cater to trends or to start some, it's just honest idk
mixing genres well is a great plus to

i feel like i'm forgetting something.

Not just the vocals. The reverb was in the instruments as well. Too much reverb to me is like trying to be over-the-top unless in specific songs where reverb is used specifically for beauty such as in "Loveless."

Well said. I always thought that Low used reverb specifically to combat beauty.

A good chorus. Verses in the right place. People who belong.

I tend to prefer albums that take a light touch approach to production and where the band's live 'sound' sort of comes through!

I also tend to prefer albums with short songs on them... Not for me generally songs that go on for a week and a bit to make some huge point (or just simply to show off) 😄

That said, there are plenty of albums that I like that are highly produced or have some long song wankery going on!

I guess at the end it just boils down to whether the sound and overall effect speaks to me or not!
