I've decided to make a thread where we can help each other with our assignments for class, whether you're in college or still in school, I think that this thread can be very useful. Anyways, I was assigned an open-ended response on Langston Hughes' short story "Thank You Ma'am"on how the main character, Roger has a poor background and how Mrs. Jones affects him. Here's what I have so far:
In Langston Hughes’ “Thank You Ma’am”, the main character, Roger, comes from a poor background. For one, he steals Mrs. Jones’ purse. This shows that he is very desperate to get what he wants, blue suede shoes, even though he does not have enough money to buy them. People like Roger with no money will do almost anything to get some money for what they need. Roger was probably taught that you may have to steal to get what you want.
“I got a great mind to wash your face. Ain’t you got nobody at home to wash your face?” said Mrs. Jones. (Hughes, pg. 1) Roger responded by saying “No’m”. The fact that Roger’s face is dirty shows that he possibly hasn’t bathed in quite some time. He might not have a bath or shower in his house at all. His face could’ve gotten dirty from spending too much time in dirty places looking for food and other resources.
“There’s nobody home at my house.” said Roger. (Hughes, pg. 2) Roger’s parents may not be home to make sure he has a good meal and is well cared for. His mother and father could both be unemployed, working really hard to make as much as they can for the family, or they could even be dead.
“He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, frail and willow-wild, in tennis shoes and blue jeans.” (Hughes, pg. 1) Roger is thin and skinny because he is not well-fed, which shows that he has a bad background. Roger might not even have any food whatsoever at his house.
In the future, Roger will be much more positive and might actually become successful. “I have done things too… you set down while I fix us something to eat.” said Mrs. Jones. (Hughes, pg. 3) Mrs. Jones confesses that she has done bad things just like Roger, and this causes Roger to relate to her. For the first time, Roger feels that he is actually trusted by someone. This could in turn inspire Roger to do better things with his life. Mrs. Jones seems to be a poor woman, and this shows Roger what he could grow up to be like.
“He barely managed to say ‘Thank you’ before she shut the door.” (Hughes, pg. 3) Mrs. Jones was being modest and doesn’t want to be thanked. This teaches Roger to be modest. With modesty comes more success. The more modest you are, the more successful and well-respected you may become.
