Thought I'd address a previous post on the same issue from another thread here (although this also addresses Goodsir and benpaco's respective posts on the subject too recently):

Yeah true, he is definitely a meme as well as an artist. It's just that many people on both sides of the argument (in this case Goodsir, who appears to be "ironically" supporting Lil B despite knowing very little of his music, and benpaco, who earlier dismissed Lil B as a poor joke before backtracking) think of him as a meme first, and that's genuinely insulting. Yes, the internet has been the major factor in his rise in popularity, with people all over the world able to joke about this guy whose seemingly non-existent flow and apparently unending positivity (and the inevitable contradictions that come with that) and totally erratic, often utterly overwhelming attitude to releasing new music make him a total one-off in popular music, but I think many people fail to recognise the complete sincerity which goes into everything he releases. He's like a hip-hop Daniel Johnston, an artist whose technical shortcomings often put people off or lead to these "joke" accusations but whose music and message comes from somewhere so real that anybody who actually listened to him would find it hard to deny. Geevy already gave a great list of reasons as to why Lil B is an amazing artist with a singular vision, and his influence on hip-hop in the last few years has been widespread and undeniable. He's a true trailblazer, and to be honest I prefer his music to Tim Buckley's. I understand that Lil B can often come across as a joke, and that fifteen-year-olds diving headfirst into (what is ostensibly) a meme with cringeworthy abandon is an unavoidable part of being on the internet in 2014, not to mention that genuine fans of the Based God can occasionally make it seem as though our support is somehow insincere or ironic (a consequence of our enthusiasm towards him and his own reputation), but if people here actually took the time to listen to 6Kiss or I'm Gay or God's Father or Illusions of Grandeur then they'd realise that there is far more to him than "swag" and some admittedly hilarious tweets about treating every one of god's creatures as equal or showing the world how "Based" you feel today or about how fantastic and world-changing his own music is, as though he's been asked to pen his own press-release that pitches him somewhere between Tupac, The Beatles, the entire cast of Live Aid and an actual deity. But if those tweets and other short snippets of meme-worthy behaviour or lyrics are all you have to go on, it's not really your place to comment on him as an artist, ironically or otherwise.

Will be checking out one of his albums tomorrow, then. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers.
