One Man Band by James Taylor

My Charts:

Overall #603
2007 #15

James Taylor may have run out of material a long, long time ago, but he can still put on a good show. The "one man" in the band is his keyboard player, and he also has a ridiculous, forklift sized drum machine that's pretty cool. Comes with a DVD, and is a good look at Taylor's heyday as a 70's folk rock leader.

The Greatest Hits Collection by Bananarama

My Charts

1988 #42

Everything you'd ever need from Bananarama. They didn't write songs, there were barely any harmonies on their recordings despite the fact that there were three of them, and bad 80's keyboards were the instruments of choice on their albums. But this is also fun and catchy stuff. Their versions of "Venus", "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)", and "Help!" are hardly definitive, but they are fun. They were rolling in hits during the 80's for good reason: this is just upbeat fun music. And it's not as bad as people might remember it.

Pescado 2 by Pescado Rabioso

Artaud by Pescado Rabioso

Edit: Great pieces of early 70's heavy psych/psychedelic rock from Argentina.

Forty Licks by The Rolling Stones

My Charts

2002 #17

A two disc mother of all Stones best of's. Although things are not in exact order, the discs are separated by periods: disc one covers 1964-1971, and disc 2 1971-2002. Disc one is better, but disc 2 features four previously unreleased songs, most notably "Losing My Touch", sung by Keith Richards. This is a blast of a compilation.

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan

My Charts

Overall #208
1960's #31
1963 #2

Dylan's second album, and the one on which he first flexes his muscle as a songwriter. Songwriting is at the top of my list, so it makes sense that an album like this be my album of the day. He already sounds confident and sure, and his songs are already developed and strong.

The Hits/The B-Sides by Prince

My Charts

1993 #46

Excellent career spanning (up to 1993, anyway) compilation that shows just how amazing Prince really is. Rare tracks, songs that he recorded that were bigger hits for others, and, of course, his greatest hits. Three discs of excellence. The songs are maddeningly not in chronological order...but I guess I'll live.

I have two albums of the day...

Dirty Mind by Prince

Just at times filthy and always fantastic album! It's more organic sounding than his later classics and it just has a very straightforward funk feel. And his voice is soooooo brilliant!

And my other album of the day is...

James Booker's early 80s masterpiece "Classified". Somehow this ain't in the database. It's fabulous and James Booker was the quintessential New Orleans piano/singing wild man. When he was on he was ON like crazy! Honestly, he was a musical force of nature. Brilliant really doesn't begin to describe him.
---------
And my album of the year has been Lost In The Dream by The War On Drugs and that album will probably end up stealing all my attention today.

Three by John Butler Trio

My Charts

Overall #400
2000's #84
2001 #10

John Butler is one amazing guitar player. Most of what he does is on acoustic, but this band can rock. Three is their second album, the first to be released in the US. Great music from Australia, great songs, and a glimpse of even better things to come.

It's A Shame About Ray by The Lemonheads

My Charts

Overall #102
1990's #29
1992 #5

Really great 90's album with awesome pop-rock songs and even "Mrs. Robinson" tacked onto the end. This and Come On Feel The Lemonheads are very good, and a breath of fresh air among all the gloomy grunginess of the early 90's.

I found a new favorite album today. ๐Ÿ˜„ It's called "Creep On Creepin' On" by Timber Timbre. It is the best music I hear for long time.
