Yeah, you're right about Nico. The Marble Index is quite wild. But, idk, I still hear more song structure and less wildness on Starsailor than Lorca. Lorca is just an impressionistic, long-winded walk through some crazy and fragile mind. I love it and it has moments of utter beauty (as do all the T. Buckley albums I've heard do) but it always struck me as more "abstract" than Starsailer.

Yeah, maybe you're right...I actually can't really listen to either Starsailor or Lorca anymore. Kinda lost my love for them. They're very sort of...dark and claustrophobic, to a degree that I don't enjoy the listening experience. So, fair enough.

I don't get the whole Scaruffi thing. Is he supposed to be a joke or a respected music critic? I've read a few reviews by him and he doesn't seem all that bad so I wouldn't understand why he's a joke, but if people constantly insult him, I can't quite understand how he's a respected music critic either. I don't often read reviews from critics because I don't really care about what they have to say most of the time. It also gets really boring to see the same things said about the same albums all the time. However, sometimes I do read a Robert christgau review.

I can't take Scaruffi too seriously. He never gave an album more than 9.5 out of 10, and if I'm not wrong none of the '00s albums are higher than 8.

Ok. I'm with Happymeal. WTF is Scaruffi? No beating around the bush this time. 🙄

Basically, I'm just butt hurt that The Gollux so consistently disagrees with me and agrees with more serious music critics like Scaruffi. I want everyone to agree with me, damn it!

While I don't think difficult = original, there is some correlation between the two. Familiarity allows for for more approachability, so many of the most original/creative works of art are a bit off-putting at first. I think that's the case with many of the records associated with Scaruffi and what's on The Gollux's chart. Many of these records take more time than other albums to be appreciated. This is not to say they're necessarily better or more important.

As much as I love something like Chelsea Girl, Nico's later albums were more unique as artistic statements.

We all value different aspects of music for a variety of reasons.

WL/WH is actually my least favorite of the first 4 Velvet Underground albums, but I can also see exactly why others place that one on a pedestal above the others. This is why music can never be objective, we all value things differently

From my understanding, Scaruffi is just another self-important music critic with pretty great taste, although it often comes from a narrow perspective that ignores the concept that art needs not to be groundbreaking to be incredibly affecting. He basically places so much value on originality that there's no room for pure enjoyment.

I actually don't think the "only cares for originality" thing is right. I'm pretty sure there is somewhere on his site where he says that wild innovation without emotional content is pointless. He's just a snobby critic with odd tastes and more a idiosyncratic sense of authenticity- his attacks on famous artists usually blather on about false marketing hype than anything

Yeah I didn't mean for it to come across as "only caring for originality" but as overvaluing it (not that originality should hold great value).

That's really funny! He seems to have done quite well marketing himself! 😮
