Mclusky Do Dallas is a great mix of post-hardcore, noise rock, and indie rock.
But, I believe these are the Unwound albums you are looking for...
I'm going to third the Unwound suggestion. I feel that Fugazi, Refused, and At the Drive-In are very immediate; their songs are loud and noisy and they incite aggression (which for most of us non-violent types is probably just bouncing up and down or flailing our arms). On the contrary, Unwound is at the critical point where the angst has built up, but it is never released; it's a restrained aggression. I think it's comparable to Joy Division and post-punk.
Whenever I'm feeling angry or sad, I play "Lady Elect" for temporary relief. For five minutes, everything is okay. It topped the list of my best songs of the 90s.
It's on Repetition, but it's not representative of the album. The rest is more abrasive, which might be more relevant to your request. Unwound later developed the sound of "Lady Elect" on their album Leaves Turn Inside You. As NickVolos mentioned, Leaves is a true gem. It's probably my favorite post-hardcore release. Just grab both and listen to the one that better reflects your mood. 😁
I've only listened to New Plastic Ideas once or twice and I don't remember much besides the track "Envelope," but it must be great if RepoMan suggested it! I'm going to replay that one now.
What a wonderful thing to wake up to!!! One of my favorite post-hardcore bands being talked about so eloquently. Thanks, creator! Almost makes up for the complete beat down the Miami Heat put on the Pacers last night. Almost. Lebron is pretty much unstoppable when he's in beast mode. Especially when the other team looks like it would rather be getting manicures.
Anyways, about those Unwound recs...
Besides Fugazi, Unwound is my favorite post-hardcore band. Like Fugazi, I think their entire catalog is stellar. Leaves Turn Inside You is a gorgeously textured & reflective post-hardcore album. It suggests rather than screams. I just did't think that was the vibe Mercury was looking for. After exorcising their Kurt Cobain fetish on their excellent debut Fake Train, new plastic ideas is where Unwound developed their own sound which they than perfected on The Future of What. I think they're Unwound's most immediate stuff and capture that " blistering, excellent, intense and emotional post hardcore" that Mercury wanted. Repetition is a spot on choice as well, but I always like to start at the beginning of any good story. Like Fugazi (or Talk Talk or Slayer for that matter), it's kind of fun to trace the evolution of a band's sound over their catalog.
