Cartola is the first studio album from a 66-year-old guy who helped to define a genre of music that is so characteristically Brazilian that it would be strange to see it performed anywhere else. And this is just the problem for me. The music is pretty, but it speaks in a foreign language, in both the literal and figurative sense, and I find it hard to connect with.
Meanwhile, Queen II has to be among the whitest recordings in the classic rock canon. Queen takes the theatrical stylings of progressive rock and wraps them in a melodic, throbbing package so gringo-friendly that their music has even become a fixture at sporting events. Whereas bands like Genesis and Yes give the impression that they actually see themselves as “progressive”, Queen just sounds like a bunch of guys who love being over-the-top white.
I'm not a huge fan of either album and you're unlikely to find either playing in my house for others to hear. However, Queen II had some fun moments, especially in the second half.
