I was once at this university sports bar and they played In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in its entirety. It was very weird.

Heard Joy Division's "Isolation" in a sushi restaurant, and a Portishead song (I forget which one, but I wanna say it was off the self-titled album) playing at a restaurant where I dropped $500+ for two. Odd choices for restaurants.

Like, the place is strange, or just a strange place to hear music?

I believe that I heard "Sour Times" by Portishead at a store at the mall once.

Oh! Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" was playing at some non-musical event I was at.

Maybe a James Blake song or two somewhere, too.

in 1986, i spent the summer studying in japan, and our class made a trip to hike up mt. fuji. it's not as rugged as it sounds -- you take a bus to a dropoff point, and there's a wide, well-worn path all the way to the top, and it is pretty much a solid line of people the whole way. other than having to climb over a rock once or twice, it was a pretty low-impact hike. we started hiking about 10pm so that we would reach the top in time to watch the sunrise.

at one point a couple japanese guys carrying a big boombox came up behind us and as they walked past, the boombox started loudly playing "Papa Don't Preach" by madonna. it was definitely surreal to be hiking up a sacred mountain accompanied by the strains of the material girl herself...

there were another couple guys who carried their bicycles all the way up and rode them back down (there was a separate path for the downward trip). all in all it was a very interesting experience, although we missed the sunrise because it turned out to be a cloudy morning :-/
