Unless you catch the Meat Puppets in concert, Curt Kirkwood's guitar playing may not instantly grab you like J Mascis'. But once you see him live, you quickly realize that his guitar playing is just as distinctive. That's what I love about certain bands such as the Dinosaur Jr and Meat Puppets, their sound is so unique that even hearing a fraction of a given song, you know it's them. And their distinctive guitar playing is the biggest reason why.
But the main reason I nominated Curt is to let you all in on the worst kept secret in 80s underground rock. Meat Puppets II is not the Pups best album. Not even close, despite it's well deserved essential status. Up On the Sun is. Up On the Sun simply lives in it's own acid fried, sunburnt world sounding like nothing else on this or any other Byrdsian Plateau. But instead of wasting your time trying to describe the indescribable, come take a jump in its Swimming Ground...
Love Kirkwood. As someone who know's nothing about Bailey, can someone else suggest some things to listen to. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
