Afterhours wrote: | Here is a virtual reinvention of both rock and jazz music, sharing a compositional unity that is fascinating, complex and lyrically illustrative in the vein of Lewis Carrol. Wyatt uses the foundations of folk music to support a dense structure of weaving styles and sounds, creating a richly textured and dynamic haven for his fascinating portrayal of his own life-changing journey, reflections and considerations on his intimate relationship with wife Alfreda Benge. --February 2007 |

With 'Rock Bottom'(1974), Robert Wyatt, vocalist, drummer and composer extraordinaire, vented his persona with an intense emotional religious hymn and child-like nursery rhyme sensitivity set within a musical soundscape that transfigured both rock and jazz.
Wyatt's uniquely original falsetto jazz-singing style, is a cross between soul, Buddhist mantra and pyschedlia that while an acquired taste to some, remains a thing of tenderness and supreme beauty.
'Rock Bottom' is a frail, tender and original masterwork encompassing happiness, sorrow, faith and resignation within a metaphysical unity. --March 2011 |

I genuinely don't know what to pick. I went with Meet the Residents against Peace & Love last time around, not necessarily because I think it's a better album, but rather because of the impact it had on me when I first heard it. This time around, it's a more difficult choice. Both these albums truly excel in their respective fields, Rock Bottom being an amazing, heartbreaking display of human expression, lyrically and musically dense, but imbued with an undeniably playful pop sensibility, managing to bring in elements of progressive rock and even jazz at times, without ever doing so in a pompous or patronising way, whilst Peace & Love is the sort of album that makes the atheist in me feel genuinely envious, a ritualistic, almost free-form series of mantras, backed by that incredibly soulful Niyabinghi drumming, which does its best to try to prove that faith is the best catalyst for producing the most sincere, human art imaginable. I'm leaning towards Rock Bottom at the moment, solely based on the fact that its themes speak more to me and my outlook on life, but it really is almost impossible to split the two in terms of quality and emotional impact. Assuming I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight and Zuckerzeit both get knocked out, these two are the best albums left in the tournament after Veedon Fleece, and I'd be happy to see either go all the way. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

This may be what it comes down to for me as well. The Dadawah record, while beautiful, is at least a little bit alien to me. Gonna take my time, though. I adore both.

I hate that this is probably going to be a blowout by Rock Bottom but it's just slightly better. Too bad this isn't the final. Would take both of these over any other in the tourney except maybe Kimono My House.

Just finished listened to Peace & Love and was pretty sold that I'd vote for it especially since it's the underdog. It's without question a masterpiece, and the best reggae album I've ever heard. Plus, there's really not too many overly spiritual albums that I connect with despite knowing the genre pretty well from my Magical Miracle Tour. As Skinny mentions, it's the sort of album that could open up the gates of heaven to heathens such as myself if I just let it.
And then I put Rock Bottom on...

This.
No matter how many times I listen to Rock Bottom, I just don't like it. It's different and well composed, but I just don't click with it.
And Peace & Love is my personal favourite album of 1974, and my nomination, so obviously I'm going with that. Hoping it manages to scrape by this round.. somehow.. _________________ Doubles & Conch

Ended up voting for Peace & Love.
Kind of think it would be cool if either Peace & Love or No Other won the whole thing just because they're both (relatively) unheralded masterpieces. But really, I'd be pretty happy with any of the remaining albums taking this except for Lamb or Kimono.
