Also I actually save a lot of money not eating meat - meat is actually pretty damn expensive (what are always the most expensive items on the menu?) But you may be bound by what your parents eat...I don't know. But I'm sure you'll figure out what works best for you anyway.
As a student I actually do find myself ordering the vegetarian option at food places simply because it saves the extra 50p or whatever, and I often choose protein rich beans over meat because of the price tag
I'm pretty sure if I told my parents I was becoming a vegetarian they'd refuse to cook separately for me, there's certainly a stigma surrounding vegetarianism with my parents despite them being very liberal - this idea it's for 'hippies and wussies'. I'm sure thousands of parents think the same way. If I have children I'd like to teach them that meat should be treated as a luxury, but it might not be very effective with such a strong meat-eating culture.
