I would just add a couple of things, if you don't mind too much.
Influences - don't think you can overlook some of the power-pop of the 70s as having a significant influence, especially on the likes of the Postcard acts, such as Big Star but specifically this:
The Role Of The Label - in the 80s especially, the label was almost as integral to the track/album's success as the band itself. Sarah, Subway, Postcard, Lazy to name but a few - some of the Sarah Compilations make for totally fantastic listening. And of course Lazy being responsible for MBV's finest and most indie-pop 9 minutes, evidence here:

Been subtly picking up indie pop recs off the charts on the site for awhile now where possible (Began when I spent a month obsessing over George Best, which is ridiculously enjoyable), my most recent obsession being C86 by BMX Bandits (Stolen off Jim's chart, cheers as always!). _________________
Excellent post, this is a great guide. I grew up with a lot of these bands and used to listen to John Peel, the greatest DJ who ever lived. He played a lot of this stuff every night. If you don't like the following tracks, this genre is clearly not for you
Ohhhh, SecondSoul reminded me. McCarthy are awesome, and should totally be mentioned among the 80s indie pop stuff. Really good C86 stuff, plus proto-Stereolab so it's gotta be good.
I prefer the latter album (which has a couple tracks with Laetitia Sadier vocals) but it deviates from the C86 sound quite a bit. They also have another one which isn't as good and nobody cares about.

Great work Suede. some mighty fine records already covered. I think Indie Pop is pretty tough to define, which is why someone like REM might not fit with the rest. Seems like the bands generally regarded as indie pop are mostly British and occasionally Australian. While for some reason some American bands like R.E.M. and the incredible dB's get omitted.
And despite some of his other questionable remarks, JMan brought up another great American Indie Pop group in the 10,000 Maniacs, who had a few really good records. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
