wasn't really sure what to expect seeing as my appreciation for the crazy ideas and whimsy of Porcupine Tree tends to be undermined by their tendency to take it all far too seriously, but this was a little different. It feels fairly profound but this time it doesn't necessarily sound like it's outwardly striving for that aesthetic. I really enjoyed the individual songs for the most part, but as an album it felt pretty felt disjointed and inconsistent (sans that drum sample that was used twice). Feels like a compilation or some collection of the like, but not a bad one by any means. Not sure I'm gonna revisit but thanks for giving me a different perspective on a band that I've always generally brushed aside

Oh huh this is cool. I had always heard of the whole Canterbury Scene thing but never really started checking it out until this year. I honestly think it's cause I would always think of cadbury eggs and I think those are gross and somehow that transferred over? I don't know, but so far I've only heard Soft Machine and Henry Cow, and now with this it seems like there's a pretty wide range in sound. Some of this stuff sounds all down home and country, like music that the dukes of hazard could get in trouble to. Like some honkytonk stylings, but there's all the progginess and then the rly synth driven instrumental section, this ones pretty weird. I'm digging it though, thanks for the heads up.
This..... is one of the greatest albums I have heard this year. It just so perfectly expresses all the things I love about music, all the while being decades ahead of its time in the context of both death and rap metal. Definitely belongs on my chart.
SecretDad, have you ever listened to any of Hayden's music? I want to see what you think of the BEAcore scene based on it.
This is interesting stuff, the first bit of track one was doing that thing with the lightly distorted loop laying a sort of bed that other stuff danced around, and now it's gone into a different sort of consistency with the whole dance music thing. There's definitely that sort of digital lofi thing going on with weird hypercompressed sounding timbres occasionally (used with intent, of course) and little touches that sort of "let you see the strings" so to speak, the quick drops to silence and stuff like the voice sample keyboard triggering business. Like there's a sort of theatricality to the production here. And then the second track begins with a sort of synth orchestral ambient type relax space, but then we go right into some musique concrete with the compression timbres and lil clicks of percussion, which then leads back into something on the grid. there's definitely a wide range of stuff going on. it also seems like there will be small things that happen but then a commitment to a sort of consistency that will extend for a longer duration. now it's onto some idm type stuff, and finishing up with the coolest bit, has a sort of arca vibe to it, and then oh wait sneaking in another thing here in the last few seconds. Yeah, that was an interesting ride for sure, some of it I preferred over other bits, but the diversity of style and duration really kept me on my toes. Cool stuff.

You know, I really don't want to be pigeonholed as "the ADD-addled aspie kid who likes fucked-up, percussion-and-string-heavy 'world' music", but dang, this really DID hit all my musical weaknesses. It was just so epic and crazy and fun, and definitely should go on my 2014 chart pretty soon.
Anyway, I'm having trouble figuring out what PsychoScorpion likes. I used to think he was a dadrocker, but his chart suggests he's much more into general folk rock, which I know absolutely nothing about. So how about some MORE fucked-up, string-heavy "world" music?

And oh hey that new Colin Stetson thing, I actually already had that downloaded but still haven't listened, I have a ULL starting soon so I'll post my thoughts on it in there.
Is that for me, or someone else? It was my last girlfriend's favorite album ever, so I already heard it dozens of times last year. It's a very flawed release, but it still has its moments of glory.
(It was probably also one of the best albums Mutt Lange ever produced, though that's not saying much)
