Underrated on the overall chart if you ask me. Easily one of the top 10 albums of the 90s; deserves to be in the top 100. If OK Computer is the Revolver of the 90s
okay, following you here - british pop musicians masquerading as Artistes and getting a lot of middlebrow plaudits for it even though the music isn't good. okay.

then If You're Feeling Sinister is the Pet Sounds of the 90s.
wait, what? why? because they're both pop albums? what similarities exist beyond that?
Deserves all the praise it gets. This and Tigermilk would both be considered in a "desert island" scenario for me, even if we're only talking about a handful of albums.
Of recent I've started to play Tigermilk more and I think with time I'll prefer it to this, however it's still really great. Murdoch is probably my favourite lyricist, he's an absolute poet, paired with his soothing vocals and the beautiful guitars and strings, gahhhh we all love B&S right (except Applerill bc he sucks (jk ly)) _________________

They're THE pop album of their respective eras. They're both generally upbeat sounding, maybe not always in the lyrics, but they're both so darn cute. There is very little difference in quality between the best song and the worst song on each album. They're accessible to the point that you could probably play either for any random person (black, white, rich, old, young, redneck, wigger, intelligent, stupid, bible-thumper, drug dealer... whatever) and convince them it's the best album they've ever heard. And because whatever album you would call the Pet Sounds of the 90s probably isn't good enough to be called that.
Great pop album all around. I haven't listened to Belle and Sebastian's full discography, but something tells me they haven't made a better album than this one.

ewwwww that universalism bit ouch don't you think it's a bit hasty or misguided to say that white musicians making beat-less music are some kind of transcendental sound that all the hordes of the earth shall succumb to? and you have still not pointed out an aesthetic similarity between the two. upbeat sounding? that describes like half or more of rock music. and saying they have high quality songs and are accessible is saying "these are good pop albums" in more words. and i wouldn't call anything the Pet Sounds of the '90s because my approach to describing music i like isn't insipid marketing trash regurgitated as art criticism.
