Yesterday was my 18th birthday, so I went with my friends to see Epic Rap Battles of History. I crashed up front and some lady called me an entitled ass, which if I am hooray.
Last Saturday night glitter-bubbles and I went and saw The Tallest Man On Earth with Lady Lamb The Beekeeper opening at House of Blues Houston. Which, side note, is possibly my least favorite venue in the city, damn them for booking everyone who passes through town that I care to see.
The show was incredible. Lady Lamb shocked me with how good of a voice she has. Some stuff I was unsure how it would sound live, but she killed. Her presence and confidence on stage were also impressive considering she was just alone with a guitar.
The Tallest Man On Earth is a straight up entertainer. He was flying around jumping off the walls and sang everything i could've hoped he'd sing, including a cover of Blaze Foley's hit "If i could only fly" which knocked my socks off. He even went so far as to clown a couple idiot hecklers.
It was a great night, except for the fact that it was at the "House of $20 drinks and Corporate Disclaimers". _________________

You're chart is sooooooooo american. It's like a diner in here.
Last night I saw DakhaBrakha. They're a Ukrainian band blending every style of music imaginable and are just incredible live. In a way they reminded me of Cocorosie in their genre-hopping, vocal gymnastic playfulness, but DakhaBrakha veers more into the realm of traditional Ukrainian folk and afrobeat rhythms.
managed to make it to GY!BE this weekend with my girlfriend. the opener was Xylouris White, this fascinating project with a Greek folk singer and the drummer from the Dirty Three. really kinda stole the show, honestly. their set took an hour, maybe with a bit of change, and seemed to fly by in about thirty. unfortunately, we only got through about 45 minutes of Godspeed's set, as we were at the very front and center without earplugs and i'm much more careless with my long-term health than she is, plus the night was kind of getting on and we had a limited time to see each other this weekend. what we did see was pretty cool - the visual element for the opening parts was neat if a bit gimmicky. i understand that they can't have a narrative visual piece lined up with the music perfectly in a live setting, but even a greater variety of impressionistic images instead of just flickers of the Allelujah! cover and the word Hope would have been a bit more interesting. still, their music makes a lot more sense in a live setting, and despite thinking the band is less good than they're made out to be on record, actually seeing the moving parts and hearing them in a more focused, overwhelming environment definitely lent them the weight that Godspeed fans always hype up. definitely a great show that i'm glad i got to see, and definitely avoided the lethargy and monotony that Swans fell into back in May (funny enough, there were widely conflicting opinions about this among acquaintances that I later talked to about the show, all of whom immediately started drawing comparisons to the Swans concert).

Ugh, managed to miss Xylorious White when they were here in Ljubljana. Heard good things about it.

So you may have made it one quarter through ๐คฃ
Anyway I remember having to step outside for a few minutes because of the same issue, not a show to attend without earplugs (not as bad as Swans though)
Much more pleasant standing area than any other concert venue I've visited thus far in Boston. Came in only knowing about Pile (who were disappointingly short) and Krill (who rocked), but Palm was the runaway hit of the night.
