this argument might hold water for big-H historicists or something, but this is just my personal impression. i found Ys to be an incredible album after one listen. i find Divers to be mediocre and inconsequential after one listen. just because i'm listening to one in its historical moment and not the other i don't think takes away from my evaluation. i surely wouldn't say that my opinion is intended to at all indicate what i think the album will be seen as in the future. i'd have to see what rock writers think of it because their opinions are the ones that will be used to carry it down the streams of time. they all seem thoroughly tickled by it, and good for them. they can have the thing.
i don't really understand why assenting or dissenting opinions from the status quo on new albums have to be checked as SPECULATIVE and HALF BAKED when entire genres of music are evaluated by the contemporary listener based on a single listen of a handful of mp3s and that sort of behavior goes unchecked as just an opinion.

Yes, but when personal impression is placed into public forum, it has the ability to persuade or dissuade others. It's just my opinion, but I think one listen is hardly enough to evaluate most records. We're quick to jump the gun to be part of the discussion and it's an unfortunate byproduct of the times in which we live. It seems as though there's hardly a line between wanting to hear something and just wanting to have an opinion about it anymore.
This is not to say your opinion is wrong in any way, just that I'm skeptical of any instant assessment _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
but these instant assessments go completely unchallenged when it's someone approaching a verified canon record for the first time, enjoying it, and deciding critical consensus must be correct or dismissing something that's had time to take root in critical consensus and hasn't. i think my one listen to a new Newsom album as someone who's listened to her other work extensively and spends quite a bit of time on this sort of thing is far less damnable than the wanton dismissal of the avant garde that goes borderline praised on this forum whenever some unsuspecting listener is scared by a screechy saxophone for forty five minutes or the eager acceptance of whatever dime a dozen rock band some impressionable teenager saw listed on RS, NME, AND Pitchfork and decided they had to have a 128kbps rip of.

To be quite fair, i just hold you to higher standards _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
So Divers is really good, even great, but probably Newsom's worst in my opinion. I don't have too many complaints, just that the instrumentation is a bit weird and unfitting at times (Leaving The City being the worst offender), and in general it feels less ambitious and striking than her previous albums. That's a fairly nebulous complaint, and maybe not entirely fair, but it just doesn't seem as gripping or unique as the last ones. Anyways, still a very good album, and Anecdotes and You Will Not Take My Heart Alive are among her best tracks. It's no Ys-level masterpiece but still more good Newsom-y stuff.
Also there really should be more discussion about the new Protomartyr on here, it's so good.

Does anyone else think that Beach House should have just taken the better tracks off of their two albums this year and released it as one? ๐ค
While Thank Your Lucky Stars is far from bad, it's super underwhelming. With Beach House releasing so much similar music, they just aren't the type of band to get excited about when they announce two albums in two (three?) months... I can't seem to wrap my head around considering the new release a separate entity in their discography. I even think I would have cared more about it if they released in 4-5 months down the road.
Opinions?

i don't have time for these instant assessments. oh wait, yes i do, because they're positive and align with my opinions.

Ahh you got me. Look at me being vaguely hypocritical but not really.
I originally just voiced my opinion that it's tough to assess so quickly and that I personally was enjoying my first listen. A totally reasonable opinion that you took as a personal attack for having a negative opinion of a critical favorite. Didn't mean for it to be personal or specific to just your assessment. there's also pages and pages of ratings already on RYM, which I believe is too soon, but i understand people get excited or disappointed and wanna voice it _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
Has anyone listened to New Order's new album? It's pretty spectacular, probably their best since Technique. Easily the best songs they've written in over twenty years.

altho i really like both. i think im the only person who finds it really exciting to have both at once. i think it helps to remove some of the pretense that comes w/ releasing an album, like this obligation to create something perfect, or very good, almost as if there's a rubric, like "will this be canonized". it's honestly kind of nitpicky. it just feels like music for its own sake more, which appeals to me.

...and this phenomenon goes beyond music. It's everywhere. People seem to feel obliged to form an opinion. Saying 'I don't know' or 'I haven't made up my mind yet' makes some feel indecisive or weak. I agree that sometimes an initial opinion can spring forth quickly, but I wish more people were patient enough to mull things over. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
