I am completely guilty of loving pop country singles.

And also Dancing Queen is as perfect as can be.

Because I'm rather bored, let's play a little game I like to call

In Defense Of The Genre by Say Anything

In other words, since a lot of the genres mentioned here are the ones that commonly come up as the "I like music just not X", here's an album worth checking out for each.

Toto456 wrote:
Cumbia Villera

I don't know Cumbia Villera, I've found some stuff called Cumbia but can't even find that to be honest with any extent of confidence that it's the correct genre.

Toto456 wrote:
Indie Folk

Generally I would say either "Either/Or" by Elliott Smith or "For Emma Forever Ago" by Bon Iver, but if it's a problem of needing something more exciting, maybe

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear

with the psych influences would be good for you.

Applerill wrote:
Alternative Dance

No Now by Clarence Clarity

Really avant garde, a lot of art pop influences here

Applerill wrote:
Alternative Metal

ร†nima by Tool

Tool made me believe in prog at least a little, though this one's a little less prog heavy than their other stuff I've heard

Applerill wrote:
Americana

The Shepherd's Dog by Iron And Wine

Just a lot of different things going on here, not as generic as some other releases of the genre seem to be.

Applerill wrote:
Britpop

The Last Broadcast by Doves

I'm pretty sure you yourself defended Doves the other day (and I'm not calling you out here, just saying they're a good one for people who aren't always fans of the genre).

Applerill wrote:
Coon Songs

nope

Applerill wrote:
Djent

I'd actually never heard of this classification before, so take it with a hint of salt, but I kind of liked

Altered State by TesseracT

It's not amazing, but I'm not a big prog-metal guy to begin with.

Applerill wrote:
Opera, Pops Orchestra, and to an extent Show Tunes

I think these are more meant to be experienced than listened to, much for the same reason that while listening to the score of a movie can be pleasant, it works better in context.

Applerill wrote:
Pop Reggae

Doing some research, this seems like a hard genre to easily define, but UB40 is great, and I specifically enjoy

Rat In The Kitchen by UB40

Applerill wrote:
Progressive Country

Garcia & Grisman by Jerry Garcia & David Grisman

More Progressive Bluegrass than Progressive Country, perhaps, but a good album. Grisman is incredible.

Applerill wrote:
New Jack Swing

You mean Gigantic? Cuz he was pretty cool and IDK why he was rebanned.

Random Access Memories by Daft Punk

Specifically 70s Disco

Jackson's "Off The Wall" produced an incredible number of catchy tunes, and a lot of other bands put out good individual tunes, but as far as albums are concerned I've always enjoyed

Risquรฉ by Chic

and the funkier

I Am by Earth, Wind And Fire

iknowwhenthat wrote:
Slowcore

There's a ton here but how could you not adore

I Could Live In Hope by Low

Anti wrote:
Grindcore

Link

not really my genre at all but

From Enslavement To Obliteration by Napalm Death

is the best I've heard

Anti wrote:
Pornogrind

This is a thing I've never heard of and am too scared to google.

AAL2014 wrote:
All of the other cores I can think of

Hardcore Punk:

The Record by Fear

Post-hardcore:

I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone by Crime In Stereo

Metalcore:

Sempiternal by Bring Me The Horizon

(perhaps a bit of a guilty pleasure but eh)

Melodic Hardcore:

Siren Song Of The Counter Culture by Rise Against

Nerdcore:

MC Chris and MC Lars are both great in weird nerdy ways but

Is actually an incredible album just from a musical standpoint. Don't see DOOM or Kool Keith agreeing to work with anyone else in this genre, really ever.

Queercore:

biased because local but

Deflowered by Pansy Division

Horrorcore:

6 Feet Deep by Gravediggaz

Mathcore:

Jane Doe by Converge

Hardcore rap:

According to rym, this includes Tribe and Black Star apparently, but that's just so wrong I don't even want to get started.

Supreme Clientele by Ghostface Killah

An album that actually keeps growing on me

Emocore:

Rites Of Spring by Rites Of Spring

The word core has lost all meaning as I've typed.

AAL2014 wrote:
today's pop country

Largely with you here more out of my own ignorance than anything else, just haven't gotten that into this genre.

Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars

was pretty good though.

Happymeal wrote:
Christian rock

One I've never dug into much but if

Catch For Us The Foxes by mewithoutyou

and the rest of their catalog counts (it is on a christian rock label and about christianity largely but stylistically different), then they're wonderful. New album is the best musically, I think this might be my favorite to just read the words to though.

Jorbaa wrote:
Gansta-Rap

Gonna assume you meant Gangsta or that I'm mroe out of touch than I thought, but while it have sort of negative connotations as a project/album, I actually really loved

Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A

once I finally really gave it a shot, though if you're not a fan because you've listened to things like this, maybe check out Freddie Gibbs' Pinata from last year, or I guess settle for liking some of Dre's poppier stuff.

Try and defend these two piles of wank, Benny boy:

- National Socialist Black Metal
- White Power country music

In fact don't. And one should never defend post-Signing Off UB40 regardless of how hard you try.

The first would be interesting to hear, the second I'm pretty sure I could find the defense of "Accidental Racist" from a year or so back ... that song is a mess and the people scrambling to protect it sort of made my day

And Signing Off is their best far and away, but less pop reggae and more just vaguely 2-Tone inspired Reggae. Post-Signing Off I think UB44, Rat in the Kitchen, and the self-titled are fun but lack some of the depth of the early stuff, haven't listened to Present Arms, Geffery Morgan and Baggariddim are meh, and everything I've heard post self-titled just wasn't interesting. Haven't heard any of their 21st century output and don't really see a reason to check it out.

if you actually hate disco you're either uneducated towards the genre (most likely) or you just suck. either way it's not good for you. like if you actually actively hate all of these singles...

Dancing Queen
Heart of Glass
The Number One Song in Heaven
Yes Sir, I Can Boogie
Electric Avenue
Tarzan Boy
Stayin' Alive
You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
I Feel Love

i just don't get life anymore. (would like to note i could get you having peeves with like i don't know maybe half or more of these, but all and i just don't know. i really don't.)

disliking disco for being silly while listening to grown Englishmen play little pan flutes and sing about wizards is fucking absurd

i wish the people who were compelled to do Disco Demolition Night could be beaten and lit on fire themselves
