Wow, you bash prog rock quite a lot, still you have a Pink Floyd album ranked 15 on your chart... I can understand that you don't like the more technical high speed prog of for example ELP (it tends to be my least favourite part too), but maybe if you didn't focus on the label, you would end up liking other prog rock albums? I don't know exactly how your diary works but I'll give you a few prog rock albums (but don't think it's prog rock! actually it can be labelled otherwise):
Anathema's "Alternative 4" (1998), which is quite melancholic (and I read you liked that) and at the same time heavy, and Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing" (2005); I read you like guitar work, and its song's aren't too long compared to other albums (I read you don't like "long boring" songs).
If you listen to them, please let me know, write me a PM or something ๐

Of course I know I shouldn't focus on labels and quality music is to be found in all kinds of music, also in prog rock, but by getting to a certain age you learn that you don't love all music. Pink Floyd is absolutely a favorite band of mine; even from ELP I like Pictures at an Exhibition. It's just that in browsing through years like 1973, you see so many of these so-called progrock groups.
Ex I thought I didn't like krautrock and by browsing through 1973 I already listened to two very good ones.
In any case I'll listen to your two suggestions and give you my opinion but you write yourself that the Anathema album is close to doom metal ๐

Thanks for the reply and for having a look to my chart and rating it. As for Alternative 4, I write that it is an atmospheric album which serves as a midway between their doom metal and their prog rock eras. Without being an expert at doom metal, I would say that it is closer to prog rock, and anyway I alredy said that the albums can be labelled otherwise ๐
BTW, as well as telling me if you enjoy them, feel free to send me any similar vibe reccommendations.
Edit: Re-reading your chart I see you like Eagles' "Take it easy". Don't miss Jackson Browne (I guess you know that he was its co-author)'s "Take it easy"+"Lady of the Well".

Hi manurock. I did try to listen to the two albums you proposed but both really are not my thing (a bit too melodramatic).
And here are some more albums of 1973 I have listened to:
- Over-Nite Sensation by The Mothers of Invention (nr 33): this album makes me think a lot of the other Zappa album that I really appreciate: Sheik Yerbouti because it really has the same feel and even a few similar tracks. That's to say, this is one of the Zappa albums I like and I'm gonna include it in my personal top chart of 1973.
- Burnin' by The Wailers (nr 36): except for the great Get Up, Stand Up and I Shot The Sheriff, I didn't find anything special in this album
- Call Me by Al Green (nr 37): not really my thing for a whole album
- Queen by Queen (nr 38 ): I discovered one very good song that I didn't know: Keep Yourself Alive. The rest is a rehearsal for the rest of their career ๐
- Goats Head Soup by The Rolling Stones (nr 39): I like this album better than a large number of comments seem to point out. Already only for the fabulous Star Star (should be another title ๐ ), I would include it in my personal top chart. But there's of course also Angie and another slow I really liked: Coming Down Again. The rest of the tracks are also good.
- A Wizard, A True Star by Todd Rundgren nr 40): a bit too weird and druggy for me, although their are some good parts
- Mekanรฏk Destruktรฏw Kommandรถh by Magma: I liked this album better than I thought it would. It reminded me a lot of the fast repetitive structures of some minimal music avant la lettre, like Koyaanisqatsi by Philipp Glass and also the female voices remind me of it. I will add it to my 1973 chart.
- Birds Of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra: and likewise for this album. I liked the fusion jazz with very good soloing and jamming. So another addition for my chart.
The next album to listen to is the three song album Fare Forward Voyagers by John Fahey.
And some more albums:
- Fare Forward Voyagers (Soldier's Choice) by John Fahey (nr 43 on the overall BEA top chart of 1973): it's certainly expressive accoustic guitar playing but a whole album is a bit long
- There Goes Rhymin' Simon by Paul Simon (nr 44): Kodachrome is one of my favourite tracks of Paul Simon and hearing it just gives me a happy feeling. Also American Tune is just great. The rest of the tracks is also good in general but the two mentioned tracks make the whole album and that's why I'm gonna include it in my personal top chart of 1973
- Aerosmith by Aerosmith (nr 45): On this debut album of this band there is one highlight and to me also their best song overall. It was called somewhere the blueprint of all power ballads and I completely agree: of course it's Dream On. The rest of the album is not at all that good, so I'm not gonna include it in my chart
-Brothers And Sisters by The Allman Brothers Band (nr 46): I already knew nearly all these tracks from live albums. It contains two of my favourite tracks of the Allmans and in music full stop: Jessica and Ramblin' Man: I just love those songs. Also the rest of the album is very good so it will end up high in personal top chart.
- A Passion Play by Jethro Tull (nr 47): only two tracks and to me very boring music although I like many other albums of this band.
- Dixie Chicken by Little Feat (nr 48): Little Feat is not really a band I like and that also goes for this album which is viewed to be their best
- Grand Hotel by Procol Harum (nr 49): and another classic album starting with a classic title track. Maybe the rest of the album is a bit over the top because of its lush orchestration but I like it
- Gentleman by Fela Kuti & Africa 70: nice world music but not entertaining enough for a whole album especially because it only contains three tracks
Next album to listen to is 3+3 by The Isley Brothers.
And this is the last batch of albums I listened to of 1973:
- 3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers (nr 52 on the overall BEA top chart of 1973): That Lady is a good track but the others appeal to me a lot less
- Foreigner by Cat Stevens (nr 53): This album surprised me: a progpop album by Cat Stevens? And at a first listen I wanted to discard is as again overlong and noodling (although the album in itself is fairly short) but then I listened a second time and I discovered that in the very long Foreigner Suite there is a very nice piano piece interwoven with Cat Stevens' incredibly good voice (starting at 14:34 until the end). I still wonder why the track has to take up a whole A-side of an album but I begin to appreciate it more and more. Also the shorter tracks on the B-side sounded at first a bit dull but started to develop in something much better. So to my surprise I will add it to my personal top chart of 1973
- Funky Kingston by Toots & The Maytals (nr 54): not bad but not for my personal top chart
- Mind Games by John Lennon (nr 55): of course the title song and Out The Blue are really good but the rest of the album disappointed me so I'm not gonna include it in my chart
- Living In The Material World by George Harrison (nr 57): this album from that other ex-Beatle is much better. Give Me Love (..) can stand beside the other classics of this underestimated Beatle and also most of the other tracks are very good so a welcome addition
And this is the end of my discovery through 1973. All in all I like this year as a good rock year and I agree more or less with the BEA canon although there were a lot of progrock albums I didn't really like.
This is the final verdict (BEA overall rank at the start and then also the BEA score, my rank before this listening session and then after:

These are the albums of 1974 I have already listened to:
- On The Beach by Neil Young (nr 2 on the BEA top chart of 1974): An album of old Neil I didn't know very well and as of nearly everything of him I like it
- Red by King Crimson (nr 3): I couldn't listen to this album anywhere: not on Apple Music, not on Spotify, not on Youtube (only some live excerpts): a bit of a pity because I liked some things of what I've heard, but in this rare case I can't give an opinion
- Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt (nr 5): I didn't really like it
- Court And Spark by Joni Mitchell (nr 7): not a bad album but Joni Mitchell is not really my thing
- Relayer by Yes (nr 12): too many long tracks that lead to nowhere
- The Heart Of Saturday Night by Tom Waits (nr 13): this is a very good album by Tom Waits in very good form
- Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan (nr 14): This is really the Steely Dan I like.
The next album to listen to is Veedon Fleece by Van Morrision.
Here is the second list of albums of 1974 I listened to:
- Veedon Fleece by Van Morrison (nr 14 on the BEA overall top chart of 1974): I only knew the first masterpieces of Van The Man so I thought he wouldn't be able to keep it up on his following albums but this album is actually very good especially in the opening tracks. Although at the end it gets a bit more boring the overall quality of the album is very good overall so I will include it in my personal top chart of 1974
- Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan nr 15): This is the Steely Dan I like so a welcome addition
- Mirage by Camel (nr 16): some part of this album are not bad but others are overly long so I will not include it although I doubted a bit
- I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight by Richard & Linda Thompson (nr 18): there is one very good tracks on this album ie the title song but the rest is not really my thing
- Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne (nr 20): I knew Jackson Browne from his "hits" but I didn't know any tracks of this one and it surprised me in a good way. Maybe a strange comparison but some of the harmonics make me think of the Eagles and that also goes from a few of the more rocking guitar parts. Overall a very good album.
- Bad Company by Bad Company (nr 21): Of course Can't Get Enough is a very good track everybody knows but the rest is not upto that standard so I won't include it
- Kimono My House by Sparks (nr 22): The first two tracks have been major hits and they're also fantastic. The rest is maybe a bit over the top and not that good but I am nevertheless gonna include it in my chart
- Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd (nr 24): another great album by this Southern Rock band of which already knew most of the songs. I Need You I didn't know and is also very good. In any case something for my personal top chart
The next one to listen to is Natty Dread by Bob Marley.
