System of a Down was one of my two favorite bands when I first got into music. Despite that, I never heard their debut until a few months ago when I was getting back into the band. There was a 2/3 year stretch where I didn't listen to them at all; at the time I thought I had grown out of them but listening to them again made me realize I was just temporarily sick of them. Their music still excites me, and while I find their debut a little lacking (too many of the songs rely on yelling the same phrase repeatedly, and Sugar is the only real standout) it's still the album in this matchup I'm most likely to listen to again.

The Gris album wasn't bad, it just felt a little too long for what it had to say. There are some cool strings at points and the louder moments are pretty cathartic, but in the end it didn't affect me as much as SOAD.

I vote for "To the Burning Soul, The Constellated Soul ..." by "Grey". Simply better for me than the debut album of a System of a Down.

This one wasn’t even a contest for me— and I say that as a fan of System of a Down’s general output. Perhaps if this had been Toxicity or Steal This Album! I would’ve had a harder time delegating which is my preferred album. Ultimately, the debut from the alternative metal outfit has no chance against the second release from this highly ambitious black metal project and it really does show. Gris has a better concept of mood, tone, and flow than System of a Down; and they are just ultimately better at building up songs to become big releases. À l'âme enflammée, l'âme constellée is one of the finest depressive black metal releases created in the last decade or so and it is pretty apparent. I would also say Gris has the more impactful release as the echoes of the album in question is still making waves in the depressive and atmospheric black metal scenes only three years after its release.

Soil is my favourite, with its middle-eastern influences and its dynamism, altough it's not really a "standout" as i find the album pretty consistent overall. Interesting that you had kind of a pause from them, it's been the same for me for other bands.

I won't spend too much time talking about SOAD's debut, i'll just say it's awesomely heavy and crazy at the same time and i really love it. I slightly prefer it to Toxicity too.
As for the Gris' album, at first i was a bit annoyed, but as the listening gone on, it got me in the right mood. Also i started doing some work while listening to it and it worked even better as a background (which means it's actually good, for me). I would have prefered if the soft/loud work was more accentuated, there was something in the sound (expecially in the singed parts) which i didnt like, and a few parts felt a little too dragged (only a few, i was afraid of more being that long), but some parts really got me and overall i enjoyed it. Def has its own appeal. Also i agree with Gowi on everything being very well structured. I'll come back to it maybe.
So, not easy in the end, but i went with SOAD.

PS: The Gris' album got 7 votes here and the album page shows it has only 4 ratings. Is everyone following my strategy?
