And this the last few albums of 1994 I listened to:
- Korn by Korn (nr 53 on the overall BEA top chart of 1994): This album is all about hate and self-loathing which finds its absolute quintessence in the final long track where Jonathan Davis is actually howling between all the cursing and shouting. To me this music is really on the verge of pathetic and lacking good songs so not really my taste.
- Blowout Comb by Digable Planets (nr 54): really nothing for me.
- Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion (nr 55): there's not a bad song on this album but there isn't an outstanding one either. All in all this is really mainstream punk so I won't include it in my personal top chart.
- Cracked Rear View by Hootie & The Blowfish (nr 56): this music is too FM for me and without highlights.

And this ends the listening session of 1994 (all albums with a BEA overall rank better than 2500. This year certainly has a fair share of classic albums and some albums in my personal top chart of the year might be completely unknown to most of you.

Through this listening session I have discovered a number of new additions for my top chart but all in all not many.
And this is the final list with at the start the overall BEA rank and after that the BEA rank of the year and the evolution of the album in my personal top chart before and after.

Normally I skip 5 years but there are still a large bunch of albums of 1998 (and also ranked lower than 2500) I haven't listened to so I'll proceed with 1998.
  • Quote
As already stated I'm going back to 1998 because I haven't listened yet to all the albums in the overall BEA top 2500. The last album of this year I listened to was This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours by The Manic Street Preachers and this is the next one:
- Ocean Songs by Dirty Three (nr 30 on the overall BEA top chart of 1998): I had already heard about this band but I didn't know it and that seems to be a miss. This album is supposed to be different than the others but it is certainly an album that makes me want to discover the other albums as well. With its haunting interplay between violin, piano, guitar and soft drumming sounds this music is both very mesmerizing and very beautiful. Especially the two longer tracks build up to very nice endings and although the album is very long it never gets boring which is already a big feat because it is built upon repetition. Certainly an addition for my personal top chart of 1998.
- Mark Hollis by Mark Hollis (nr 34): I like the latter Talk Talk albums but this solo album of Mark Hollis is a bit too repetitive and introspective to really appeal.
- Hello Nasty by Beastie Boys (nr 36): I didn't like the Beasty Boys at the time and I still don't.
- You've Come A Long Way, Baby by Fatboy Slim (nr 37): also not my thing.
- Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk by Jeff Buckley (nr 38 ): I like Grace but I overlooked this album which was issued after his death because it was described as taking advantage of his death. But after listening to it I must admit I really like it. The second half with outtakes is maybe a bit too much but the first half is very good especially Nightmares by the Sea and New Year's Prayer.
- From The Choirgirl Hotel by Tori Amos (nr 39): I already said it: I don't like Tori Amos but also this album doesn't really strike enough chords to make me love it.
- Is This Desire? by P.J. Harvey (nr 40): There are tracks on this album which aren't too bad but overall it isn't of the same quality as other albums by PJ.
- Americana by The Offspring (nr 41): the hits are of course known by everybody and these as well as the rest of the album is a bit too juvenile for my taste.
- Clandestino by Manu Chao (nr 42): Manu Chao was the singer of Mano Negra and their 1989 album Puta's Fever which was mainly in French was very good. But this album (mainly in Spanish) is not good at all. It is very repetitive and I really have the impression that all the (many) tracks are the same song. This is a complete retreat from his former music.

The next album to listen to is Moon Pix by Cat Power.

And here is the first contribution of 2007 for the year 1998:
- Moon Pix by Cat Power (nr 45 on the overall BEA top chart of 1988): not bad but a bit too much all the same to me
- Dizzy Up The Girl by Goo Goo Dolls (nr 46): not really good
- Moment Of Truth by Gang Starr (nr 49): rap is not really my thing
- Big Calm by Morcheeba (nr 51): atmospheric but not really my thing
- Follow The Leader by Korn (nr 52): every song is another attempt by Jonathan Davis to reach the same growl as in the other songs. Another reason for nu-metal not being my favorite genre.
- Internationalist by Powderfinger (nr 54): I had never heard of this Australian band and after listening to the first tracks I was not convinced but after a while I began to like their songs. I'll put it in my top chart and maybe will be listen again to see if it stays there
- Nightfall In Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian (nr 55): exaggeration is the middle name of this middle earth combo and for me it's just too much.

The next album to listen to is Grand Turismo by the Cardigans.
  • Quote
And here is my final entry for 1998 albums with two remaining albums to discuss
- Gran Turismo by The Cardigans (nr 57 on the overall BEA top chart of 1998): the songs are not bad and they're doing their best to rock a bit more than in other albums but nevertheless not really my thing.
- Psyence Fiction by UNKLE
(nr 58 and the last album ranked better than 2500 in the overall BEA top chart): in fact what I like most about this album are the contributions by other artists like Thom Yorke on the gorgeous Rabbit in Your Headlights. The own songs are a lot less in quality.

And this ends my journey in 1998, a year which was a bit of a mixed bag: some great albums and some good discoveries like The Living End but not the best year in music ever. This is the final verdict (with at the start the BEA overall rank and after that the BEA year rank and my rank before and after this listening session:

And these are the first albums of 1999 I have already listened to:
- 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields (nr 5 in the overall BEA top chart of 1999): this album is massive. The voice of and also some of the music makes me think a bit of Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy. I actually enjoyed listening to the 69 tracks on this very long album but I'm not sure if I will listen to the complete album again but I did include some ten songs in my playlists. So overall a very good album.
- Emergency & I by The Dismemberment Plan (nr 6): Some of the tracks on this album are not bad but overall not completely satisfying for me.
- The Battle Of Los Angeles by Rage Against The Machine (nr 8 ): RATM are really not my thing.

The next album to listen to is an album by the Dream Theater (Metropolis, Pt2).
  • Quote
My second contribution for albums of 1999 I listened to:
- Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater (nr 10 on the overall BEA top chart of 1999): again some progrock and this is maybe the best one from what I already heard by this band: sometimes enjoyable guitar playing and especially The Spirit Carries On where they try to sound like Pink Floyd are not bad but overall again too much noodling.
- American Football (2016) by American Football (nr 14): this album makes me think a bit of Sun Kil Moon but not as good. Honestly and For Sure are not bad but overall not enough highlights to make this an enjoyable album
- Enema Of The State by Blink-182 (nr 16): this album is a bit too juvenile for this guy
- 2001 by Dr. Dre (nr 17): another rap album I don't like, sorry.

The next album to listen to is When the Pawn... by Fiona Apple.
  • Quote
The next albums I listened to from 1999 were:
- When The Pawn... by Fiona Apple (nr 20 in the overall BEA top chart of 1999): To be honest I expected more of this album but all in all it doesn't have enough variety to keep things interesting.
- Clarity by Jimmy Eat World (nr 21): and this album I liked better than I thought; there are a few good tracks on this album like Lucky Denver Mint.
- Black On Both Sides by Mos Def (nr 22): not my thing
- California by Mr. Bungle (nr 24): I didn't like this album at all.
- Slow Riot for New Zerรธ Kanada by Godspeed You! Black Emperor (nr 25): again the same trick by GY!BE but a good one: only a few tracks in which the music builds down to a thunderstorm. I quite liked weathering it.
- Vision Creation Newsun by Boredoms (nr 26): strange album with lots of tribal rhythms and I must say I liked it.
- Make Yourself by Incubus (nr 27): for me bad nu-metal
- Stupid Dream by Porcupine Tree (nr 30): and this one completely took me by surprise: this is a fantastic album which both takes its inspiration from Pink Floyd and Radiohead and the music just sounds great: it's not so dense as other progrock and the album just breathes space and good vibes: this one will be already high in my personal top chart and might even be a grower
- Things Fall Apart by The Roots (nr 31): again not my thing
- Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol. 1 by The Olivia Tremor Control (nr 32): this is a very Beatle-esque album with lots of psychedelica which is sometimes going into the wrong direction but the highlights are many and very good.
- The White Stripes by The White Stripes (nr 33): the fact that the band only contains two people is one of the reason that I'm not a big fan of the band although they've got their highlights which are not in this album but overall it's not bad so I will put it anyway in my overall top chart of 1999
- Still Life by Opeth (nr 34): this music is a bit too swollen for me.

The next album to listen to is Surrender by the Chemical Brothers.

These are the last albums of 1999 I have listened to:
- Surrender by The Chemical Brothers (nr 34 on the overall BEAEA top chart of 1999): There some good tracks on this album like Let Forever Be but overall not good enough
- Operation Doomsday by MF Doom (nr 36): totally not my thing
- The Unauthorized Biography Of Reinhold Messner by Ben Folds Five (nr 37): this is a real hidden gem I'm sad I haven't discovered it early. Especially Don't Change Your Plans is a wonderful song.
- No Angel by Dido (nr 39) not bad but couldn't hold my attention for a whole album
- Judgement by Anathema (nr 41): this album was better than I thought and especially the harder tracks like Pitiless and the title track are very good
- Performance And Cocktails by Stereophonics nr 44): I already listened to a number of albums of this band and the more I listen to them the more all the tracks seem to be the same. It's not their worst album but I'm a bit bored by their sound as a whole.
- Slipknot by Slipknot (nr 45): also a bit the same all-over and not really inventive nu-metal like rock
- Teenage Snuff Film by Rowland S. Howard (nr 47): this album has increased in rank fast so it has come into my listening scope and I'm not sorry about that. This is a great album about lost love but packaged in very nice guitarscapes (just listen to the great guitar shredding Sleep Alone) with the singing and lyrics somewhere in the league of the harrowing Nick Cave and Ed Kuepper.
- Supernatural by Santana (nr 48 and with an overall rank of 2349 the lowest ranked album higher than 2500): I love the earlier Santana and I always though this album to be some kind of a sell-out but overall the songs, except for some horrible ones, still make the guitar sing the old way. However after a bit of doubt I nevertheless decided not to include this album in my personal top chart.

And this concludes my journey through the year 1999. Overall this was not a bad year in rock music but my personal top chart albums are not in the overall top 2500. Nevertheless I discovered some very nice albums of which some I had even never heard of: Porcupine Tree and The Magnetic Fields were among the pleasant surprises and also that big climber by Rowland S Howard to which I'm finishing listening to at this moment is incredibly good and in the best Australian tradition.

This is the final list of 1999 with first the overall BEA rank and then the BEA year rank and my personal rank before and after this listening session:

Thx Seth: sometimes it's a bit too much because there's so many albums I don't like (I think it's clear by now that now that I don't like rap/hip hop so I don't know why I bother) but then I discover some fantastic albums and it makes it all worth again. It also gives me the opportunity to revamp my personal year charts.
