All you young whippersnappers don't understand context! When this came out it was the first album that really succeeded in mixing rap styles into rock guitar music. Without this breakthrough you don't have Rage, Beasties, Beck, and so many more that came after. And you don't have the more mature Peppers that gave us BtW etc.

Rage and the Beastie Boys both existed before this album was even recorded.

True but Rage wasn't popular at the time of BSSM's recording. On the other hand, The Beastie Boys were. But it doesn't matter. BSSM was certainly an influential album. Nobody's denying that. But should importance = greatness? I tend to agree with the notion: it isn't about who does something first, it's about who does it best.

Even when I was a RHCP fan I wasn't too big on this album - it's a little too long and has a lot of filler. I haven't listened to it in forever but "I Could Have Lied" is a really great song.
