i feel like we've done this topic a couple times before. there's generally a divide in what "the worst" is, and nominations tend to teeter along, beside, between:
comically inappropriate
actually grossly offensive
tacky and tasteless
bland
the problem is, if it's making you do a double-take, then it's doing more than 95% of the rest of what's on the shelf, so it's rather successful...and not the worst. the bland covers i think i the greatest sinners. the safe covers....
in my youth, i used to buy albums by obscure artists blind. i'd go into the record store with $10 and say to myself, "whatever album cover *stands out* the most is coming home with me". i bought a lot of weird albums at that time, and surprisingly found some really good ones.
separately, i like the strawberry jam one... i wouldn't expect to find it here, but i like the mildly unpleasant route. someone ought to use victoria reynolds' paintings for an album cover sometime. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.
Though I might not think it was as bad if it wasn't from a band known for great cover art. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
I say this because it looks like they just threw a bunch of junk in a room and told the band to do whatever, then some guy took a picture of it. I believe that if this wasn't an album by what was the hottest band in America in 1970, it wouldn't have sold squat. But it was Creedence.
This thread has been kinda done a few times...but it's always fun to revisit. I do think it's pretty funny when people immediately start putting up pictures of OK Computer and other very highly rated albums that have covers which are no less than average. I'm actually surprised (pleasantly) that this didn't happen here. Bad album covers are not usually associated with really good albums. Most of the really bad ones I have never heard, and most people probably have never heard, because it's simply terrible marketing to wrap your product in a turd.
Here are some covers that were simply not very well thought out...

The band with the most consistently s*&^ty covers: Muse? That's my vote.
yeah, but they have the most honest covers, matching the shitty music and all ๐

The Who's A Quick One is pretty corny. Jazz album covers are usually uninspiring.
honestly, Who's Next has kind of a gross cover. i mean, this coming from a guy who listens to grindcore and regularly sees mutilated genitalia on those, but it's just sort of crass and offputting (like the Who)

yeah, they look like e-invite templates

The Velvet Underground And Nico for example is really just a banana, it doesn't represent the album at all.
I know I just called the Who immature, but i do think the banana in context of being a sticker that you peel to see a phallic naked banana is sort of reminiscent of the music. listening to the music, you peel slowly and see from the sing-songy, mellow opener to the Dylan-reminiscent steady rock and roller that has sorta weird lyrics but is catchy, to the first appearance of the Teutonic Ice Queen Nico, before you get to "Venus in Furs" and suddenly you're listening to an album about BDSM that sounds like BDSM.

The White Album. Funeral. Nevermind. They required little to no thought/creativity and aren't inherently interesting, unlike London Calling for example that while not very thoughtful or creative, is at least badass.
I agree with you that the White Album cover didn't take much effort (though I do think it reflects the music within well). Funeral and Nevermind, on the other hand, I think look great. I especially like the latter, because it's photography and thus there was a lot of chance involved, doubly so since it was a baby they were throwing into a pool. London Calling's cover is wasted on London Calling's music, IMO.
