I tend to use "contemporary alternative" to describe the radio/alternative-lite approach that was to come. The word does sound like an oxymoron though.

Here is another of my favorite albums of 1991 I would like to recommend to everybody who likes their powerrock powerful and catchy.

Blind Love by Ratcat

Ratcat is an Australian band which already existed from 1986 on but only had their heyday on this 1991 album which is a gold nugget not rivaled by any of their other albums. They were fairly big in Australia (they even reached the number 1 place on the Australian album charts with this album) but not really known in other countries which is a pity.

One of my favorite tracks, Don't Go Now appears on this album but there's also the slowburners Hopeless mind and The End and the Ramones-like That Ain't Bad and especially Strange with its quirky stop start nature and experimental feel.

If you want a fantastic feelgood powerrock/punk album don't hesitate and give this one a go. After listening back to this album I moved it from the 6th to the 4th rank in personal top chart of 1991 and it's also high in my overall one album per artist top chart (at nr 34).

God. That cover is just awful. No wonder it didn't catch on. lol. I will check out it out soon! :D

yeah! this is fun. lots of different styles of punk pop/power pop. Super catchy. My fave so far is "Pieces" which is completely inspired by the Buzzcocks, one of my all time faves. Def recommend to fan of this kind of genre. One of the songs sounds like Weezer before there was Weezer. Another one sounds like a 90s pop punk band covering the beach boys. Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜

I'm glad you liked it Tilly. I can agree with you on Pieces: Buzzcocks all over. Your comment is indeed funny: they sound like totally not original at all but they in fact preceded some of the bands that also had this sound.

And on the cover: of course it's awful but it's so awful it becomes fantastic. If you think about it it totally matches the title of the album and you can't say it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb (although I've always thought that it's the middle finger of the doctor which goes in the heart ๐Ÿคฃ )

So true! You should totally, absolutely check out this ...

My Brain Hurts by Screeching Weasel

One of my favorite Pop Punk albums of all time. And it came out in 1991 as well.

And, no. I'm not buying your defense of that godawful album cover. Sometimes bad is just bad. ๐Ÿคฃ

Funny that the album cover on Apple Music and in other places is the same one as on BEA but with cartoonish insect figures instead of real people ๐Ÿ˜‰
I've listened to the album and it's indeed big fun but I didn't find anything special in it other than that: a bit Green Day on speed/Westcoast punk (although they seem to come from Chicago and they're compared to the Ramones).

๐Ÿ˜ฒ OMG! You're right! I never saw that before. The original was so perfect. ๐Ÿ˜ข Here's the new & UNIMPROVED one people ...

Remember this album game out before Green Day. It really gave pop punk a shot in the arm in the states sort of like Ratcat in Australia. Anyways this album is part of my youth and the melodies r ingrained in my brain. They're a part of me. To me it's like the FIFTH Ramones album. Now that I think about it, I think it's the album that got me into The Ramones. lol. Anyways, it's a part of me and was a big part of my 1991 listening experience back then. I remember walking everywhere with it on my walkmen. lol.

Here's another album you absolutely NEED to check out, Dihansse ...

Microgravity by Biosphere

It's currently my favorite album of 1991 and the best rediscovery of this little project. I wrote it up here ...

Okay. I'm (finally) done collecting albums for 1991. So much great stuff, but I've finally had to draw the line. I was getting obsessed.lol. Needless to say it's ENDLESS how much much great shit there is to listen to.

I'll mostly just be making entries in my Mellow Zone diary before returning here to give a synopsis at the end of February. I'm going to start making my write-ups shorter so I can highlight more albums that r deserving some LOVE.

Peace!

Great list (great that you included the Band Of Susanss, sorry that you didn't like the Blue Aeroplanes: I'll try to explain one time why I adore that one on Rhyner's topic) and still a few albums of your list I'd like to check out like that album of the Moles and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I understand that you want to highlight albums in your list that are not in the overall BEA canon but I somehow find it a bit hard to understand that you don't include albums that you regard as Hall Of Fame (like Smells Like Teen Spirit) in your top chart while other like Trompe Le Monde are included.

I also like your choice of EP's (I'll have to have a look at that Pavement EP) and comps and hope you'll come back to your not mellow enough The Aints (are the Screaming Trees mellow ? ๐Ÿ˜‰ )/

Anyway great work and I learned a lot in rediscovering this year with you!

Oops! Sorry to confuse you & everyone else, Dihansse. I'm NOT done with 1991 yet. I'll be done sometime in Late February. I just reread what I wrote and it is very confusing. I'm only done collecting album to listen to. I'm now going to listen and absorb these albums over the next month while giving short reviews on my blog of the ones I think are excellent. Like The Band of Susans!!! That album rules and will end up being pretty high I think on my eventual chat.

Yeah. The Pixies Trompe Le Monde is a slam-dunk entry in my Hall of Fame and thus probably will not end up being in my finalized year chart which again should be done by late February.

lol. And unfortunately my brain decides what I can and can't listen to! And there seems to be no rhyme or reason to some of it. Some factors I'm sure is how tired I am, if I've heard the album before (the case obvs with that Screaming Tress album), and tons of other stuff I'm sure. In my defense, Mark Lanegan's voice is very soothing! lol.

Thanks for checking out my chart! It will be cool to see how much it changes over the next month, but I think it's pretty solid (especially that top 50) even now.

Peace, brother!
